But I know that college football has never been better.
It's funny because while not being a Jay Bilas acolyte, I was always fine with the players getting paid, I did worry about it messing with some good aspects of the game (and it has, to some degree). Specifically, it makes it harder for Wisconsin to be consistently good IMO - at least in the way they used to do it.
But now I hear guys like Bennett talking like this and my response is *jerkoff motion*. Buddy, you made like $20+ million coaching. Survive and adapt. If you don't wanna adapt, that's fine. He could've offloaded some of the roster management stuff and collected a paycheck for at least another decade. Somebody else will be willing to do it in a "modern" way.
It sucks losing 5-6 guys from your roster every year, but there are coaches that will make lemonade out of lemons here. I think part of Bennett's angst is the game changing also favoring more offense (and 4-year player development being not a thing) and he felt like a fossil.
A decent pod on the subject from last week. This is related to college football but it applies to college basketball. It makes an argument for collegiate teams to adopt pro-style organizational structure. GMs, Directors of Player Personnel, "salary cap" analysts, etc.
