There are lots of studies that support that diet sodas are actually worse for you than regular sodas.

Your body can not process the aspartame and is better off processing real sugar.

Oh I know this, but the sugar content in regular soda is crazy and I don't feel either are good for you. However, if I'm going to drink 4 cans of regular soda or 4 cans of diet soda, I'm going with the diet to avoid sugar. Obesity is a real consequence of all the sugar in our diets and and it can be argued that sugar has reached dangerous levels.

I'm a fan of sucralose over aspartame as well, but again I really only go with water or zero/low sugar sports drinks. I don't advocate for any sodas, diet or regular.

Cmon', man!

Not quite, but I blend strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries together with different fruit juices to make smoothies. I drink one almost every day and it can replace a meal like you said, it's filling enough. Also is very cleansing and makes you feel good.

Yea, I blend instead of juicing but mostly because I don't have a juicer (I'd do both if I did, probably). I do what you do but add veggies, throw a handful of spinach in one of those things for the nutrients and you can barely taste it. Things like baby tomatoes and cucumbers also blend well without dominating the taste.

Well Aspartame does break down into Methanol. I can't believe this article doesn't even mention that. And the results are significant statistically but not in real life. They make you slightly more intoxicated. I'm sorry but from habit I critically analyze any journal article.

Well your body can process aspartame. It breaks it down into two amino acids and methanol. The oxidation of methanol into formaldehyde and formic acid is where real problems occur.

I would also stay away from Splenda if you guys are into that at all.

Used it as a sugar sub in my coffee until I read how awful that crap is.

And Truvia

I used a tiny pinch of real sugar now in my coffee and some days none at all.

Curious about this. Do you know the ratio?

I wouldn't worry too much about Splenda. The journal article your link is based off of is terrible. They had no statistical calculations between body weight and used percentage changes in weight of mice to report, all without stating the base weight used. They also only used 10 rats per group studied. The controls were also bunk. They didn't use a "sugar control" to equalize Splenda intake to the same caloric intake of regular old sugar. This is important because higher sugar intake does lead to higher fecal pH. There is more I can explain but I won't get too much into it.

For me, I've just decided to avoid all sugar substitutes as a rule.

I buy good coffee so sugar isn't necessary.

Yeah do what works best for you. I don't trust anything from food to sports' owners to politics so spending my time understanding what I can from all sides has become the norm.

I'm with you. n=16? I'm far from a scientist, but I have no idea how you can get reliable results from 16 considering the differences in which people process alcohol both mentally and physically. I'm pretty sure I had a few "studies" in college where we had 16 people drinking a blowing into a Breathalyzer.

My biggest problem is I don't see a control. Does diet soda make you drunker or does regular soda combats the effects? Shows how much social media sucks when I heard many people proclaim this as fact with out even looking into what the study was.

My main concern is how do college girls stay thin? They eat like crap and get drunk every weekend.

I had a lot of friends who magically stayed thin, then all of sudden junior and senior year they gained a ton of weight and hadn't locked up a bf. If you think it is tough staying fit, try getting fit with no work ethic, years of eating whatever you wanted and not enjoying sports.

The girls I knew in college drank on weekends, but didn't eat nearly as bad as the guys I knew, and also hit the gym a lot.

It isn't so much that diet makes you drunker, I guess, it's that the sugar in regular soda slows the process.

I've had several people tell me that straight up cutting soda out of their diet helped them lose some weight without really changing anything else. That's another reason I'm really going to try and quit again.
