european teams play very aggressive defence.. it will be very hard for someone like Giannis to control the ball well..

Could it be a learning experience for him to deal with that kind of defense? I don't mind if he takes his lumps in Euroleague for a few games and gains valuable experience before he figures it out.

Re: Giannis' Development
games with National teams can only be beneficial for players.. he will earn experiance and he will learn how to react better in some situations.. thats for sure.. but i dont know what is the best for Giannis for this summer.. because he need to understand better the new role he have to this team.. stay in USA and practise more his game or join the National team? in the age he is now is very important to work hard in the off-season..

Absolutely , not only he will improve in a much stronger defensive mindset but he will improve as a defender himself.
Im not sure about point tho, it may happen in few possessions but the way FIBA rules are doesnt give big advantage like in nba.
The biggest thing is that many will play zone defense against us and force making shots which Giannis could thrive at.
This summer should be very interesting one.

This is kind of what I was thinking.
First of all, I don't see Greece letting him run the point, so this is all academic.
But if they did, I'd think his biggest issue would be trying to deal with the generally more disciplined Euro team-Ds- not whether he could hold on to the ball.
And that will still be interesting to watch, because even though he won't be running the point, he's still going to get the ball in the half-court and make decisions with it. I don't see Greece just constantly sticking him in the corner like last summer's FIBAs.

He wont be on corners, the coach said that himself. Last year we had many players and Giannis a rookie in the team. Now he is the guy that got the keys of the NT.
The thing is that Greece traditionally got very good guards so its hard to put Giannis there but im sure he will handle the ball a lot and will initiate the offense from the wing.
I see him playing point vs teams that arent playing Euro defense like Canada and such ( that is if we ever meet).
non the less is gonna be interesting.

Re: Giannis' Development
we have only 3 guys + Giannis that are able to dribble past midcourt without hitting their feet in our entire roster, so I'd expect Giannis to handle the ball a lot. There's a strong possibility that we'll consider Tyler Dorsey, the Freshman from Oregon for the 5th G spot....

I read this report too.
To tell you the truth I prefer him over Pappas, who is such an awful teammate and professional (and probably a bad locker room guy). And if Giannis do join the NT, the plathora of forwards (even if Printezis won't join the team) will make him a standard option to handle the ball.
No hay banda.

Re: Giannis' Development
Why SHOULD Point Guard Giannis happen this year in the NT?
OK. FIBA and Zone Defense will limit his abilities to run the floor. BUT!
The Greek NT is struggling against zone defense since 2009. Main reason we don't have elite shooters and still don't have.
Logically our (now) main PG would be Calathes. But he is a poor shooter also.
What would be the strategy to kill zone defense? Hope that Calathes, Sloukas and Mamtzaris become Step Curry (
) or
change our style of Game --> running the floor (a thing that our Coach is willing to do),
If we don't want to get stuck in zone defense we HAVE to run the floor. And we have the best possible player to do so.
If we face good transition defense and will have to play half-court offense nothing will change for us so the Plan
has to be to get in a situation where this does not happen.
So Giannis MUST be the starting Point Guard to run fast breaks and speed up our Game.

If Giannis is doing this he better get the **** ball. Pretty sick of them deciding who gets the ball based on who is balding fastest.

Re: Giannis' Development
One other thing about this 1000 Shots a day....
This year Giannis could be the true leader of the Greek NT.
Zisis retired (Captain)
Spanoulis either
Printezis (could miss this year due to severall minor injuries this season)
Bourousis (Monster Season this year and a veteran for the Greek NT will play maximum 1, 2 years - everbody expects his last year with the NT)
The current leaders (see above) retired or will play their last year.
This could be the best year to officially pass the torch to Giannis and give him the key for the NT (and the ball
).
Under this cirumstances: How could somebody believe that Giannis will not develop this Summer?
And I am not talking about defensive abilities or shooting but true leadership.
We all know that Giannis could to better if his self-consciousnes would be higher so this is the chance.
(Personally I don't think that we will qualify for the olympic games so we are talking about 3 Weeks with the NT
Without Printezis, Zisis and Spanoulis Giannis will not carry us to a victory against Italy which is packed with NBA Talent
in their home court).
Pass the torch to Giannis in the Greek NT. Give him the ball. Let him run the floor. Make him a leader and by the mids of July
he is back in Milwaukee and can shoot 1500 shots a day. Win-Win Situation

I'm not sure I get this post. Are you saying you want Giannis to play more like Adams, Ibaka, and Kanter? Seems to me small ball isn't working so well for GS in this series.

Have you not noticed OKC going to their bigger small ball lineup completely changing the series?
