Has anyone watched Invasion on Apple TV? I'm only two episodes in but I can't tell if I'm enjoying the show or watching it to simply find out wtf is going on. It's been a sloooow burn at the start so I'm praying it picks it up a few gears.

Until season two of Yellowjackets, Invasion was the worst season of TV I've ever stuck with. It absolutely does not pick up.

I'm not sure what they were doing with that show but I kept watching just to see if it went anywhere. It didn't.

I am extremely jealous of those of you who get to watch the Wire for the first time.

I first watched the wire when I was younger and didn't really get what was going on. Much better on the second viewing when I knew the characters and had a handle on everything. Still not gonna re-watch seasons two or five, though. Not great.

Co-signed. I got 3-4 episodes in and dropped it. A shame because Sam Neill rules.

I watched it for the first time probably like 5 years ago. I thought Season 2 was great honestly. I think we fell off with one season to go though and never finished.

I wish they had ended at season 4 (aka the greatest season of TV ever).

5 was fine, but 4.......oh baby.

Agreed, 5 was good but 4 set a high bar.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

One of my favorite facts about The Wire is that the only music in the show is music being played in the scene - by a character or in the background.

Ron Swanson wrote:Our recent HBO re-watch list has been Leftovers, The Wire, and currently Rome. All great shows that hold up fine despite some dated elements. I might give Boardwalk Empire another shot, but Season 1 was a slog (it's worth it for Michael Shannon though). I think some series hold up better than others. True Blood just feels like a show that could only be shocking and culturally relevant when it came out (vampires were huge in the late 2000's-early 2010's). Idk, maybe it was just never my thing.

Couldn't get into Boardwalk Empire either. That, Deadwood and Yellowstone are on my list of shows I started but never made it through season one - I'm betting all are good and worth sticking it out. I actually struggled with season one of The Wire, with the slow burn style - but now it's one of my favorite shows ever.

Boardwalk Empire and Deadwood I both enjoyed quite a bit. Steve Buscemi is great. Deadwood never got to wrap up (thanks David Milch and John from Cincinnati) but they eventually got to do a movie.

Deadwood worked because Ian McShane/Al Swearengen and Timothy Oliphant/Seth Bullock were absolutely perfectly cast.

Al Swearengen would be on my Mt Rushmore of all time TV characters.

So many great quotes. I like 'Pain and damage don't end the world. Or despair or **** beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man and give some back'

Man, Yellowjackets S2 is such a bummer. The first season had plenty of messy bits, but it did a lot right, and had some of my favorite moments of last year. I'm not surprised that a show that felt like a happy accident struggled to recapture the magic in S2, but I did not expect it to fall to pieces like it did.

Spoiler:
The cast is still great, but so much of what added to the charm of S1 turned on the show this year. S1 already struggled a bit with too many balls in the air, and there was no discipline the second time around. The bloat and runaway plot threads only increased, or got more frayed. The production and editing also got out over its skis, and the second season consistently looked and flowed worse than S1. Those staticky flashback cuts looked straight out of a bad Disney sitcom.

You could feel how much they were trying to "do the thing" this time around. That charming, bordering-on-camp kind of mania that was born of this gleeful sincerity? Feels way worse when you're actively trying to do that thing. That Misty dream sequence had me wanting to hide under the couch.

Yeah, the finale and Nat's death scene were really bad, but it was the culmination of a season telling you they didn't really knowing how they'd done what they did the first time around.

Love me some Alexander Payne. I'll be in on this one.
