I mean the injury thing is so tricky to me. I thought the WBC was done after Diaz from the Mets lost his season, which sucked, but the players loved it and it was a pretty big hit for fans. At some point injuries are just part of the game, sadly. The difference there is that tourney is representing your country vs an in-season team deal. But as time goes on, maybe this thing takes off. It already has had more positive feedback than I thought, even from myself. I’m genuinely looking forward to going to next Tuesday’s game more than I would some other random December game.

As a fan I found the point differential thing kind of fun last night. I can see it being annoying to teams. It reminded me of Week 17 of the 1999 NFL season which was kind of entertaining: https://youtu.be/d83Y0IGbQ2g?si=xEJm78M1avnOWh2y

I can see both sides, but I kind of like it more each day.

I think the players care so that’s kind of an interesting aspect.

I can already see that as the new dataset that nerds point to as a way to formulate in season narratives about teams that “care”

Kidd would have curb stomped him.

Maybe if his name was Denise instead of Dennis.

In the end that is the most important thing. If the players care, we are going to get more good games most likely. If they don’t, ultimately this will fizzle years down the road.

The Diaz thing was such a freak incident that didn't even happen while playing so I'm happy that they didn't use it as an excuse to end the WBC.

I think some of angst about basketball players playing in international tourneys is overblown too because basketball is the kind of sport that guys practice by playing in the summer anyway. Now if they are dealing with an injury or if the travel and time commitments don't allow for proper recovery that's an issue but the simple fact that they are playing in basketball games outside of the NBA isn't a big deal to me.
