Watchman is indeed very good. Saw the first episode of the Mandolorian and......it's ok. Some very entertaining fight sequences, great cinematography, and the production values are top notch, but they're trying way too hard with the "spaghetti Western" theme, and I think people love it more so cuz "It's Star Wars but GRITTY" (but not too gritty so as to lose that PG-13 audience). I think the random cameos so far are the best part about it.

Was wondering if any of the Aussie folks on here watched the fabulous FX series Mr. Inbetween which takes place in Australia and the season finale was last night?

Thoughts after two episodes? I havent seen any but curious how it is being received. Gritty Star Wars does seem appealing. Loved the "look" of A New Hope as everything looked so lived in (certainly the content wouldn't be considered gritty)

I've been completely turned off by Star Wars movies starting with Jedi Princess Space Float but these three episodes have been pretty good.wapith wrote:Ron Swanson wrote:Watchman is indeed very good. I held off because of the lukewarm response. I shouldn't have. Four episodes in and I'm hooked.
What I like most is how I really don't know who if anyone on the show is good or bad. I hate and love some of them in equal measure. Billy Crudup's character seems like the classic slick exec douchebag, but god I love how he delivers absolutely killer lines with a smile. He's the breakout of the fall, if that's even possible for an actor like him. Jennifer Anniston's character is so over the top and insane that when she's controlled and measured she seems like a completely different person. Her speech to the board in one of the earlier episodes about who's in charge now was amazing.
The only thing that isn't really working for me is Reese Witherspoon playing the doe-eyed role she's had for 20 years now. She's 43 years old. She's INCREDIBLE when she's pissed off and her insults are amazing, but when she's playing this naive wide-eyed "kid" it's kind of ridiculous. If they wanted to go with someone who's a little past her prime I think they still should have gone with someone about 10 years younger.
All in all I really enjoy this one. Mark Douplas is great. Steve Carrell's character is Matt Lauer and I think it ventures into parody more than seems believable but I've heard he becomes more interesting as the season progresses.
I recommend.

Re: OT: TV and Movies (with spoilers)
Mandalorian, kinda meh to me. The episodes are short, there seems to me way to much emphasis on walking around without dialogue.
I think it might benefit from a bit of narration initially. Way too many multiple angle shots of walking up and down hills and valleys.
All of the Mandalorian cats never doff the masks and speak dryly as do many of the characters. The script is kinda redundant. I know we have a guild. But it reminds me of Spiderman vs Wisconsin's own Green Goblin. It lacks expression with all the masks. I like the little green surprise, but it doesn't have any speaking parts either.
Pretty sure it is about to get moving soon though.

Man in the High Castle... Ending
Spoiler:
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

Considering it was a show I really loved, I didn't care for the ending at all.

Saw parasite on one of my flights last week. Definitely one of my favorite of 2019 and growing the more I read about it and pick up small details. My favorite in that dark comedy/thriller category since Get Out.

I need to see this again to and decide if it's as good as I think it is. I can't remember a movie I have been more engrossed in since The Fountain.

I've seen people talking about Parasite for months now and it's infuriating that I still have no idea how or when to watch it.

Mr Inbetween is fantastic, really well done and an entertaining series. I would encourage the yanks to watch it too, a bit might go over your heads with the Aussie lingo and that sort of thing, but it's really good once it gets going.

It was at my local AMC theater under their "AMC Artisan" series.

Re: OT: TV and Movies (with spoilers)
I'm basically on a never ending quest to find new great horror movies. It's a tough tourney these days, but I'm finding some pretty good ones that dance on the line of being comedies. I really enjoyed Little Monsters especially considering I don't always love zombie movies. Lupita Nyong'o is fantastic in it IMO, so you might like it if you liked her performance in Us.

I'm an hour into The Irishman and the de-aging thing is throwing me off. Deniro looks like an old ass man doing young man sh^t. What was wrong with going The Godfather route and casting a younger guy to play a younger version of the character? And like The Godfather and Brando, the aged up stuff works but I don't think you can really de-age a 75 year old guy.
F*** Marc Davis, f*** Tim Donaghy and f*** David Stern as a staff, record label and as a mothaf**kin crew......and if you wanna be down with Stern then F*** YOU TOO!!! Stu Jackson f*** you too.....all you mothaf**kas F*** YOU TOO!!!!

Yeah it was off-putting and they should have just used another actor.ClassicJack wrote:I'm an hour into The Irishman and the de-aging thing is throwing me off. I have about an hour left, it will end up taking me 3 sittings to make it through. I'm liking it well enough but not sure I would have liked it in one 3+ hour watch. They might have been better off making it as a mini series.

“One of the all-time greatest directors should have made his universally lauded film a miniseries” is a take I wasn’t expecting to see today.
