Middle of the road jazz to get you going
Coleman Hawkins - Encounters Ben Webster
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
Art Blakey - Mosaic
Lee Morgan - Search for the New Land
Thelonious Monk - Live at Carnegie Hall with John Coltrane
Stan Getz - With Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Rip, Rig and Panic
Joe Henderson - Mode for Joe
Wes Montgomery - Smokin' at the Half Note
Oliver Nelson - Blues and the Abstract Truth

I think this all falls between 1955-1965 and is the most "jazz" of what neophytes would consider "jazz."

Can't help you out on classical.

Couple more if you need

Ramsey Lewis Trio - The in Crowd - Fun live set
Jimmy Smith - Back at the Chicken Shack - My favorite organ album
Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life

The more the better. Thank you!

Any Tortoise fans here? Had a friend take me to one of their shows about 20 years ago without hearing of them ahead of time. Been one of my favorites since.

Oh yeah, Tortoise is awesome. Members are great apart from the group as well. Jeff Parker's been on a terrifc run in the jazz world over the past decade. Good as place as any to post this.

For jazz the stereotypical "first record you need to buy" is Miles Davis, Kind of Blue. The thing that makes it so special is A: how well it was recorded for a 1959 record, and B: the degree to which each horn player is able to express their individuality. Miles is cool and terse. Coltrane brings the fire. Cannonball plays bluesy and soulful.

We lost one of the all-time best jazz musicians this month, Wayne Shorter. I can't reply to a jazz post without pointing out that his last band reached the absolute pinnacle of music. The albums I'm talking about are Without a Net, Emanon, Footprints Live. This music is abstract and harder to approach as a newbie, like diving straight into a 20+ year single malt as your first sip, but it's worth a try and then maybe coming back to later.

For classical, the centerpieces of the orchestral canon are the Beethoven and Mahler symphonies. The hard thing about getting into classical is that because the music is out of copyright, everyone and their mother can record it for free, and the market is flooded with mediocre recordings. The recording of Beethoven Symphonies 5 & 7 by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Carlos Kleiber are amazing though.

The best 20th century pieces (IMO of course) are Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (look for it under the French title Le Sacre du Printemps, Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Pierre Boulez), Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra (Chicago Symphony conducted by Fritz Reiner), and Messiaen's Turrangalila.

Hope that helps.

Huge fan of The Doors, and this is one of their finest songs that--for whatever reason--was not included on the Soft Parade LP. Nice blend of bluesy and jazzy riffs. Great storytelling lyrics by Morrison. They played this live in late 68-early 69, including at the LA Forum and MSG (both shows have bootlegs) and the crowd seemingly gave it a lukewarm reception, which may have prompted them to keep it off the LP.
"Wes, Hill, Ibaka, Allen, Nwora, Brook, Pat, Ingles, Khris are all slow-mo, injury prone ... a sandcastle waiting for playoff wave to get wrecked. A castle with no long-range archers... is destined to fall. That is all I have to say."-- FOTIS

Like Comb’s Fast Car cover is so damn good. I’m totally expecting to hear it in movies for the next decade

Marty Friedman was freaking amazing at the Rave last night. His drummer is an absolute animal. Great energy, awesome show.

Whoa, hadn't seen that. Looks like they're playing in Maplewood, MN on a Saturday. That might be the one I check out.

Thanks for the head's up!
