Robinson can switch atleast.

Gobert was an elite isolation defender and a huge chunk of that was on perimeter guys on switches. Gobert is on another planet entirely defensively from a guy like Robinson.

That said, still an atrocious contract. Not really sure how Utah should’ve played it, it’s easy to say they should’ve traded him by now but it’s a way tougher decision when you’re actually the one making the call and have a talent like Mitchell ready to win and in a market that can’t attract stars ever.
Yeah without knowing what they could have actually traded him for it's hard to judge this.

Really as long as Utahs owner is willing to pay the tax this deal doesn't really hurt them. As others have mentioned cap space is meaningless for them.

Or, they could get in line to sign those average starters who were FAs but got rejected by LA & Miami, for $10-15m each.

Or, let Gobert go and save the cap space so the owners can make more money.

I think those were the options for Utah.

He’s going to be 34 making 40 million a year. By the end of this contract. He’s actually almost unplayable against certain offenses, and gives you nothing besides being tall on offense. Now you have this untradeable boat anchor for the next 2 year’s Atleast. Small market should maximize assets and this is turning something that could have been a decent trade piece last year into an albatross.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Personally I'd never spend more than $5m on a center, there's always plenty of RoLo / Christian Wood types to choose from and they're a dime a dozen.

Just saying, if you're Utah, the realistic options to do something better with your money than resign your homegrown star are very limited. I understand where they're coming from, even though personally I'd sooner buy half a tonne of coke and put it in the vents in the arena for the fans to snort than give all that money to Gobert.

Speaking of cap space holy **** has the 2021 FA class been destroyed. Who's the best guy left? Kelly Oubre?

Probably Oladipo and Kyle Lowry if Oladipo has a respectable bounce back season.

Player options for Kawhi, Jrue, and CP3 too.

And restricted free agency for Duncan Robinson, OG Anunoby, and Derrick White.

Totally forgot about Dipo, he's the biggest name who will actually change teams.

Yeah I see your point. I just think it was pretty classic misuse of assets. Do you get worse by trading gobert for some young prospects and a few picks? Sure, but you also don’t have to pay him 40 million a year. I had similar issues with paying brogdon a big contract.

Jrue.

That’s why I hope like heck they have him with a verbal 3 year/$90-$100 million extension in the bag come February.

I think he'll resign but it wouldn't surprise if it's at the max. He has a ton of leverage that I'm sure his agent will use.

If Oladipo avoids a serious injury this year he is going to get egregiously overpaid.

Bucks might have dodged a bullet not adding another first or two to our reported package of Donte + Hill + Ersan + #24 that Indiana rejected.

We traded more for Holiday but Oladipo's contract seems likely to be so horrendous that it will take picks to get out of it when his game reverts back to normal post-contract-year-push.

Of course it's an overpay but the Jazz really didn't have any other choice IMO. Don't think Gobert was getting them a great return if they decided to put him on the trade block. We're in a similar situation with Jrue really. Gonna be hard to stomach another $30 million salary on the payroll, but what do you gain by losing him for nothing or trading him mid-season on an expiring contract? You have to retain him.

Barring injury, gotta think Jrue gets a max one way or another.

Really wonder what kind of contract Conley gets if he has another underwhelming season. I know we're capped out for the foreseeable future, but he'll be 34 and I wonder if he'd be looking at taking a discount to go ring chase on a contender. Still think that you're playing Jrue out of position at PG, so Conley would be the dream target on an MLE type salary if he'd accept that kind of role.

Didn't Beal recently sign a 3/100M extension? I'd say that should set the bar pretty clearly.

We'll only have the tax MLE available for the forseeable future.

Clippers investing the equivalent of max-contract money between Marcus Morris and Luke Kennard is......something.

You can take Fultz off the list. 100% chance he gets a max contract before free agency starts with Hammond in charge.
