Re: Bucks News, Transactions, Trade Ideas - Dejounte Murray pg 13
Yes even as someone discussing it a lot I would say its a bit overstated. Its not like Giannis still shouldn't be doing a ton of attacking too. And again, if they ever finally sort out the rotation so they stagger their minutes it would help that too. Its just when they are out there together, there should be an increase in Giannis/Dame screens and as pointed out by that poster a few days ago, it can even be with Giannis as the handler. They haven't optimized that yet.
They've just yet to optimize their pairing. The attention/spacing with Dame has opened it up to be easier for Giannis. Giannis screening for Dame more should make things easier for him too so should do it more.
In addition, we have seen the Giannis iso barrell into the D fail in the playoffs every year. The one year pushed away from it they won the title. Though with Dame for spacing maybe it would work better now. Whole point of adding Dame was to solve that problem, along with the ballhandling/IQ issues that killed them last year. Last 5 mins of a close playoff game in the halfcourt you're going to want the Giannis/Dame two man to be bread/butter. Should focus on it now so they get better at it. It should lead to a better ball movement system

And guess whose usage has taken an even slightly bigger hit?......Giannis (5.7%).
I like to picture the floor completely spaced, action being run to free up shooters, ball moving constantly, and Giannis just kind of freestyling on cuts, put backs, rolls to the basket. I honestly think he would score 25 on 80-85% shooting and it would be the greatest offensive season of all time as opposed to 31 on 60% shooting.
No more fiddling with the ball up top before putting his head down into a wall, no more jumpers from the elbow, no more fadeaways. And it's not like he'd never initiate things with the ball, just get away from everyone watching Giannis try to do something offense for 15 seconds. Giannis, Khris, Bobby, Dame all have these moments where the ball just sticks with them and it's gross.

We get rid of Bobby and there's plenty of usage for everyone.
Also, we keep focusing on Bucks issues but one of the biggest issues we face is just the rest of the league's young athletic talent growing up.
Go back to late last season and the Heat were a joke, Sixers dysfunctional, Boston flawed, Cavs and Knicks nothing more than try hard, feel good stories. Pacers not relevant.
Now, all these teams just feel significantly better. We are better than we were, but not yet by enough to maintain our edge.
The Heat were a joke right up until the point where they caught fire and kicked our ass. They came very close to losing in the play-in. Things change quickly. We could win the whole thing or completely flop, what is happening now has no bearing on it.
Spo is a major outlier in your example. I don't think there are many coaches in the league capable of what he did last year. But for the most part, I'm with you. I don't think the Bucks want to fall below the 4th seed, but the rest of the season is all about building towards the playoffs. Step 1: Acquire some defense.

The offense can get better, no question about it but it is already the third best of all time or something like that.
Just a bit more accountability and some rules/structure and we could be even better. We are wasteful on many possessions and I think most of it is a remnant of the "let it fly" mantra. Giannis should not hit 3p shots, Lillard should value some posessions more instead of shooting defended from far away, Middleton should not dribble in traffic, Portis should forget the long twos, Brook should not shoot difficult 3 pointers etc. All this should be shots taken only if there are 5 seconds on the clock and there is no other option.

Giannis attacks from the top a lot because it's one of the most efficient and effective offensive plays of all time. It's become even more effective this year with new screening being incorporated.

And Dame is what will swing things the most, not a trade.
If we hit the playoffs and Dame suddenly decides he wants to suck it up and play like he actually wants to be here in April/May/June, we could not only win the title, but maybe even win it fairly easily.
If we continue to get the same Dame that we've seen here in Milwaukee through these first 40+ games, I would give us almost zero chance of making it beyond the 2nd round and another 1st round exit for us wouldn't be surprising.
A trade could certainly help matters and help our chances, but things are really going to swing on what Dame decides to do.
A duo of Giannis & Dame should be almost unbeatable in a best of 7 series, yet even lower seeds like the Pacers or Heat will have no fear at the prospect of playing the Bucks with the current level of play that Dame has been playing at.
Could end up being a scenario though that backfires for a team tough. I could see a team like the Pacers intentionally tanking games late in the season to draw Milwaukee in the 1st round based on the regular season. Then Dame decides to show up in the playoffs and the Pacers get smoked in 4 or 5 games. That would actually be pretty funny and it's a scenario that could actually end up happening.

That offense has crashed every playoffs though. Don't get me wrong, its always going to be part of the O, especially in semi transition situations. He should still be aggressive in all those times when the D isn't set. Get into a legit half court late game set with playoff bogged down D, you don't want 4 guys standing doing nothing starring at him going 1v3.
That said, I liked the post a couple days ago talking about Dame screening for Giannis. That could be great too and kind of incorporate a best of both worlds.

Tough to say but they’re reeling bad and that roster needs a major shakeup, not to mention a coaching change. Claxton and Oneale are both expiring so long term maybe Brooklyn is hesitant to commit? Bobby and Pat are locked up on team friendly deals and come with a lot of post season pedigree that would be beneficial to put around Bridges who they seem hell bent on building around..
Maybe wishful thinking and Claxton probably fetches more but being a potential rental might hurt is trade value to the point our offer looks enticing? Truthfully could be 1 of those things that’s not even close or right on the money..
RIP Kobe Forever. GOAT 8-24. Long Live Giannis

The Bucks appear - at least according to the rumors - to be doing their due diligence. I have a strong feeling that we're going to see a move. It's just a matter of whether it'll be one on the margins or a bigger move involving Brook or Bobby.

Maybe we could swing a 3way deal with Boston and Phoenix that lands us Jrue Holiday and Grayson Allen for Dame.
Holiday would provide a major improvement to our defense and in Grayson we get a guy who shot 56% from 3 in the month of January and is shooting 50% from 3 on the season.

Some of us have been citing "Giannis as the P&R ball-handler" stats for years in an effort to debunk this weird criticism. This season he's literally the most efficient out of all qualified players (1.17 PPP). Don't expect that to last, but the idea that the Giannis-at-the-top-of-the-key possessions have ever been sub-optimal offense is very much a feelings-over-facts argument at this point. Same thing when we joke about Middleton "dribbling the ball off his foot". You're just hyper focusing on the 2-3 negative plays every game.

We can even give up more picks if it is needed....genius move. Then fire Doc, and hire Bud.
Seriously, if if happened......you know the moment you do that Grayson's shooting falls off and Dame goes nuclear.

Assuming Caruso/Smart trade possibilities are dead, gotta push hard for DFS and Royce. If you can get them for Bobby/Pat/2nds and maybe MarJon, just do it. Although I’d rather someone better on ball defensively than Royce.
