The Dreamcast is where the NFL2K series started and ran from '99 to '04. I don't think it's a coincidence that the two best Madden games ever are '04 and '05. Then EA buys the official NFL license and Madden has declined in quality ever sense.

NFL 2k5 - the last in the series - was their magnum opus. That game was incredible. I think my Packers franchise went like 10 seasons long.

Unfortunately 2k games have lost their way over the years, too. With no competition from Live or the defunct Inside Drive - for entirely different, non-exclusivity reasons - NBA 2k sucks now too (IMO). It's a "but the realism" circlejerk.

Oh for sure. NBA2K has been just as just as bad Madden over the last handful of years. The Show hasn't been worth picking up in recent seasons. Doesn't sound like there's a good simulation style golf game out there.

The state of sports games has been bad for a whole console generation.

Tennis games suck, too. To my best understanding, soccer is still in a good place, but it seems that's it. I've honestly considered picking one of them up to see if I could get into it just because I miss sports games.

ETA: But since we're talking about Dreamcast and sports games, now I'm thinking about Virtua Tennis 2 and I'm sad it's not a thing anymore.

And all the 2k5 games were $19.99. As a kid, that was huge.

Virtua Tennis and VT2 were incredible games. Those two and Crazy Taxi, GTA3, Gran Turismo 2, Tony Hawk, and Marvel vs Capcom 2 were the big ones when I was in the dorms. Very good times.

It's time for a new laptop and I have no idea where to start. Looking for something with a big screen, 4K and plenty of storage. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I at least give 2K credit for making meaningful changes to their games each year when they’re already well ahead of Madden, FIFA, etc. in most areas. I think the explosion of the MyCareer mode (which tbh is what I play the most by a wide margin) has created a lot of issues for them in terms of balancing the game. MyCareer plays dramatically differently from MyLeague, so they’re in this position where they’ll patch gameplay to address balancing issues in MyCareer and it’ll pretty much completely wreck MyLeague. For example, MyLeague people say it’s too difficult to shoot and defense is too strong. MyCareer people say it’s too easy to shoot and defense isn’t strong enough. On the flip side, MyCareer people see a huge issue with chase down blocks while it doesn’t really exist in MyLeague.

Unfortunately this has led to yet another year where the gameplay on release day was amazing and now it’s trending towards being trash again.

The soccer games are terrible. FIFA is pretty much the definition of adding nothing new to their game each year. Midfielders are totally brainless on defense and players are essentially chained together now to hold formation so if you get past the RB or LB, the CBs will let your other forwards run right by them so they can maintain a failed line of defense with the RB/LB.

Meanwhile, the once great PES series went free to play this year and it’s a disaster in every way. Graphics are horrendous. Gameplay is littered with laughable bugs and even when you don’t get bugs, it plays like ****.

Need a new router. Where do you even begin? So many choices. What do you choose?

I generally use Wirecutter for stuff like this.

They recommend this one. It's on-sale and I could use a new router too. I might pick one up.

That's interesting. When I tried out the latest version 2K I played the franchise mode, like always. No interest in MyCareer or MyTeam or whatever microtransaction bullsh*t they peddle. I put away the game for good as soon as I started playing and couldn't hit a damn shot over the course of a half.

Yeah, it's two different worlds. The SG I built for MyCareer is currently shooting 70% from 3 in the 5 on 5 mode and it's only that low because I play with randoms and end up forcing shots sometimes lol. In the MyCareer modes, anyone that shoots under 50% from 3 is viewed as a bad player 3's are much easier to make than dunks and layups due to all the chasedown blocks.

Guardians of the Galaxy is as good as reviews have said. I love it. But it's also been the most unique gaming experience I've had in years. I always listen to podcasts, or music, or go dual screen watching with something else when I game. But the best parts of the game are all dialogue and conversation between the group. To play and enjoy GOTG means you have to focus on one screen. Not a big deal in the past or maybe with others here, but it's been very hard for my ADD ass.

Does platform matter to you? Honestly the new MacBook Pro might be your best bet if you don't require Windows; personally I ordered a 14" to replace my old laptop.

If you need a Windows machine, I wouldn't suggest a laptop that has a 4k screen. There's optimal distance and screen sizes for where the benefits of added resolution become noticeable and sitting at a desk that sweet spot is around 32" for 4k.

Image

You would save some cash on the system, as most 4k laptops I know of are branded for gaming and cost around the same price as entry the level 14" MacBook Pro. You could simply get a nice 4K monitor to dock a laptop into as long as you still purchase a machine that can output whatever you need it to do graphically (assuming something like video games, video editing, etc...).

I'm loving my Alienware m17 r2, can't recommend them enough. Even with the issue I had (1 dead Pixel about 2 months after I got it) they were there the next day to fix it.

I thought Tim Rogers's videos at Kotaku were annoying but highly impressive. But this is another level.

He created what's essentially a 10 hour, choose your own adventure review of Cyberpunk 2077. I just finished this intro video. Very much recommend checking it out.

It's very weird when he breaks character in the last 15 minutes or so. It was also strange as hell to learn he's older than me.
