Re: OT: General OT Thread [NO POLITICS OR RELIGION]
At no point in the past 2 weeks did I actually expect or even entertain the thought that Nadal could win.
Until the third set of the Championship.
Truly an unbelievable, gutsy performance. I'm so happy for him to exercise some of his AO demons and pick-up his second. He's now completed the double!

They've been gravy, at least for me, for a while now. But certainly, anything past this really is. I don't expect him to finish with the most majors - though you have to believe, at this point, he'll at least finish second - but I really wanted him to get this second AO. So many grueling losses since his last in 2009.

Re: OT: General OT Thread [NO POLITICS OR RELIGION]
I thought Rafa was close to drawing dead to end up ahead of Djokovic but it's back on in a big way now. If Rafa takes down the French Open this year, Novak will need 3 more wins to take back the lead which is far from a lock. And that's not even taking into account all the vaccination drama with Djokovic. Huge day for Rafa fans.

Definitely hoping Rafa wins the French to go up 2, but even then, I think Djokovic is a lock, outside of some Tiger Woods like collapse in his personal life and health. He is in great shape, is the most consistent competing across all surfaces, and the upcoming 20 year olds are not good enough to consistently defend the slams against him. I dislike him so much, even before the Covid debacle, but it is inevitable.

To be fair to Rafa, he also had that early part of his prime (2004-2008) having to constantly go up against peak Federer, which probably cost him a few Grand Slams. Even if/when Djokovic surpasses him, I don't think it'll be a consensus that he's the GOAT singles guy.

I feel like if you want to play the "this guy was playing during this guys peak" angles you can follow that down a million rabbit holes. In my view, all three of them overlapped enough in their careers that whoever comes out on top in the Grand Slam count takes the title.

Didn't even realize Olympic events started today. I usually enjoy some of the Winter games but I haven't paid any attention to any of it. And of course the time difference. And trying to find stuff between NBC, USA, CNBC and Peacock. It's great that every event is shown somewhere, you just have to find it.

Curling actually started yesterday, since it takes absolutely forever to get through. And there must have been some women's hockey, too, because Brianna Decker broke her leg and is out

It’s crazy how much more I enjoy watching the Winter Olympics over the summer variety. It’s not even close for me.

I haven't watched much tennis for a while, but the best comparison I can make watching her repeatedly dismantle her opponents was that it was like prime Federer.
She very rarely makes mistakes or even loses control of a point. She's a tennis robot. It was frankly shocking to witness.
I was thinking Martina Hingis kidnapped Barty and sacrificed her to some kind of god and got to take over her body for another run.
This is a very slow reply but Martina never had Barty's serve or mental toughness. But definitely in other things.

I do love swimming, and T&F was fun these past games with the hurdles especially, but I otherwise agree. I will happily watch any event, I think. I’ll be glued to the TV the next two weeks.

I actually watched the 3rd period. Because it's sports and it was 5:30. Anyway the shots on goal were 47-8 at one point.

Yeah, I love the swimming too. Volleyball and T&F were good too. Honestly, there isn't an event in the winter games I wouldn't watch, even if the US isn't competing. I got hooked on curling in the Olympics back when I was in college - I'll watch as much of that as I can. Ski jumping might be the one thing I'm lukewarm on.

Summer games over Winter games. Winter games are mostly for white people. Summer games are for all people.

This is a great call.
It shocks me that as Australia we have any athletes with any ability in Winter Sports, but then it's absolutely because money.
ETA: it's probably worth noting that predominately white people live where it snows still...

I went the entire month of January without drinking (it was easy with how sick I was), man it feels great to have a cold beer on a Friday afternoon. Even something as basic as a Stella.
