My gut says he's holding out for Houston to jump into the fray. Cuz there's just no way that Phoenix has the assets to dump Beal AND get Jimmy there. They're the most asset deficient team in the league. January 17th is the deadline date to watch. That's when his suspension is up and I can't see a scenario where he isn't dealt by then.

Trade deadline time is always fun and now this year it's been jumpstarted.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

If he doesn't want to come here then screw him. If he does though you definitely give him 2 years at max money and line him up with Dame. When the time comes you'd clear both thier salaries in the same off-season or maybe you trade for a slightly younger aging player with max money. Lots of options, extending him 2 more years should not be an issue in anyone's mind.

If the Bucks keep him this year, then either he declines his player option and you have to pay him next year or he walks for nothing. If he picks up his player option, then it may hurt the Bucks ability to make move next year.
I do agree that nostalgia is a hell of a drug. It ain't 2021 anymore.

The nostalgia isn't from 2025. It's from the middle of 2024, when Khris was awesome in the playoffs. That's immediately previous to the ankle surgeries. And I'm actually being consistent of my regular stated philosophy about not taking ankle issues too seriously long-term. It's a lesson from the Bucks making mistakes on Steph Curry & Ray Allen in part because of them.

So that would mean Khris' value reraises, not continues to fall. I wouldn't look at as a bad thing; Khris picking up his option & re-signing in the offseason at a probable reasonable rate for an aging, underrated, secondary-tertiary star. Losing him for nothing in the offseason is rather improbable given his history here. And it wouldn't differ from Butler, only this way you don't have to trade away a top 5 pick from the post-Giannis yrs & a viable starting center which is at a premium right now.

Thank you Jimmy! (unless they just trade for Beal instead, in which case that's rescinded).

I was gonna say, how funny/depressing would it be if we just end up being the 3rd team that takes Beal?

He'd be an even worse fit here than Phoenix and Horst/ownership might be dumb enough to do it

So if Jimmy is forcing his way to Phoenix, and no one will take Beal, does Phoenix move Booker? Like Booker and Nurkic for Jimmy and a new center?

I can't see it. They'll only move Booker when they finally blow it up to replenish some draft stock. At least, that would be the non-insane thing to do. Although who knows? I mean, we know Bud loves Brook....

Would Beal even want to come here?

Im trying to see if there is a 2026 play here for Miami but it looks like FA class is really weak. Even if they tank the next 1.5 years, who could they get? Does Luka have any interest in Miami? Would he lose money by going the FA route?
Tanking this year, their floor is probably 8th spot in the lottery (assuming PHX and Philly try to make the playoffs at some point), which is ~25% chance at a top 4 pick.

Was gonna chime in that I'd rather have Beal than Mid at this point, just in terms of playing basketball the next couple years. Then remembered his contract is 50+ per year, so you're giving up Mid plus at least one of the bigs. And he's only 6'4ish rather than the bigger wing like Mid so he's not ideal by any means. I guess if there something creative to make up for that or we kind of get paid to take Beal then I'd consider it. Otherwise, probably stay out of it and see what else comes up or that you can turn Mid into.

He’s forcing his way to Phoenix. My personal Bucks-Butler monitoring ends today lol.

Oh, pretty similar to how Dame was only going to Miami.

I get how PHX has to shake it up too, but I really don't see how this solves much for them either. Unless the main goal is to get out of Beal's contract. So hoping Butler becomes FA and you get out of that money in the future. If the plan is to sign Jimmy long term I don't see how it fixes much for them. Plus how long until tough guy Jimmy turns on two supposed softies in Booker/KD

In terms of on-court contribution, Jimmy would be a great addition. I'd love Jimmy on a six month rental. But he'll start tearing the team down as soon as they decide not to give him an extension. He'll opt-in next year and then mope and whine and drive everyone out of here.

If Mr. Heat Culture isn't paid by the Heat, why should anyone else want to pay that dude?

Quick breakdown:

- Miami doesn't own their 2025 1st. It's lottery protected this year then unprotected in 2026. They then owe their 2027 pick to Charlotte (again, lottery protected). They want "win-now" players on short-term contracts, so that pretty much entirely rules out Phoenix unless they can magically turn Beal into other assets (benching Beal was 100% a move to get him more amenable to waiving his no-trade clause).

- Phoenix is the only team that's outright said they're willing to give Jimmy his extension. That's irrelevant to Miami's incentive to move him though, and PHX has nothing in the way of veteran players on expiring or short-term deals to offer. All they can offer is secondary swaps and expensive contracts that would need to be re-routed to a 3rd team. Just don't see it happening unless Riley thinks he can resurrect Beal's career or something.

- The Memphis offer had to have not been that serious by reading the tea leaves. Guessing it would have been something like Smart, Clarke, Kennard, and their 2025 1st, but that's too much long-term salary for Miami to eat so things quickly went nowhere. Butler's agent then telling teams other than PHX to stay away doesn't mean a whole lot (see: Dame's agent doing the same thing in 2023).

The whole thing is fascinating. I think things have gotten too toxic and he's for sure getting moved in the next 10-days. My gut says Houston eventually jumps in here, but I think we're the fall-back option in case they don't. I don't love the idea, but I don't hate it either. It's.....a conundrum.

The idea of including our 31 first rounder for Butler disgusts me.
