Seems like total BS that a guy like Bobby with no history or drug issues gets 25 games yet Draymond or CP3 regularly try to maim guys or end careers and get slapped on the wrist.

Yeah I know most people will say "Don't feel bad for millionaires."

Bobby has had a rough year. Prayers definitely being sent his way.

Just goes to show how silly some NBA rules are. If the substance is banned, then so be it, but 25 games for a mild painkiller when dudes get similar suspensions for beating women, like what are we doing here. But go off, Adam Silver.

I don't understand the accident angle. Did his doctor prescribe him opiates without any conversation around whether it would cost him his job? Or does he have an assistant who gives him pills that were prescribed to other people? I've never had an assistant who hands me pills so maybe there's something about that arrangement I'm not getting.

Reading some stuff about how Tramadol is considered by many athletes to be a performance enhancer, though, and this punishment is consistent with the SPED category, which is 25 games for a first offense (drug of abuse first offense just means entering the treatment program).

From my poking around it seems like a thing where some athletes think it's performance enhancing because it lets them push harder while working out (less pain response), but that seems pretty wishy washy to me. More like the cupping fad from a few years back.

I dont know that I would take the agent's word as gospel. The initial statement is always damage control and warped towards the player cuz money.

Your point absolutely stands, but it is an opioid and I suspect that's just as much behind the severity here as the PED concern is. The substance it was confused for is "just" an NSAID.

Feels like if you can get 25 games for taking something that helps you gut out minor injuries in training, you should also get banned for just like being super tough.

Supposedly his friend had the banned pill prescribed to him and told bobby accidentally that it was the non-banned pill. IDK I could see it happening where a friend doesn't care enough about some weirdly named pill that is safe enough for him to take and just pass it off. I could definitely see a friend passing me a pain killer and mispronouncing the name.

But at the same time, this guy was labeled as an assist to Bobby and you got to think they pound this stuff into the players head that you should look at the actual bottle before taking any pill as it will cost you 8-figures if you take the wrong one.

He'll return April 8 and have 4 games to get back into playing shape.

I say the following tentatively - my understanding is that the NBA is making this decision based on what they view to be Portis's intent, which is a performance enhancing fad to push through harder workouts using the opiate. If they viewed it at plain ol' pill popping, he'd have ended up in the treatment program, but the perceived intent to enhance workouts has lead to the hammer drop.

It seems debatable that this fad actually tracks with reality in the first place (Jez?). So it very well might be that this suspension is based on the NBA perceiving Portis having a performance enhancing intent while taking a mid level opiate, regardless of whether or not it does the thing some athletes think it does. If so that's wild.

Just when we thought we could be excited for the final stretch. Guess we'll see some small-ball lineups more often.

Hopefully Bobby and the union can appeal for a reduction in the suspension.

The last 4 games may actually be really important. We have the 7th toughest schedule coming up and Magic/Pistons have a lot lighter schedule and they is a real scenario where the last 2 games could be the difference between Playin/Boston and playing the Knicks.

No. Braun knowingly took steroids, lied about it, threw the tester under the bus and only admitted it after a full investigation by MLB.

This is more like a Jannik Sinner, who claimed his trainer had steroid residue on his hands when he gave him a massage :)

Low level opioid, right? Probably don’t want players taking it for extended periods. I know people who were on it long term and a side affect of getting off of it can be seizures.

I'm not worried about that part. Bobby will be fine. He was important cover for Giannis though, especially if we're managing his workload carefully. That's where Bobby is most valuable in a regular season context.

It is similar to the Larry Sanders stuff. Like I could give a **** if they take it, but they should know better it is a rule and follow-it. (Though 25 seems extreme for something getting caught once?)
