I want a small four-door. The #1 thing I care about is technology and gadgets.I'd also like good gas mileage if possible (considering hybrids, including Prius), and am also considering entry-level luxury. I'm thinking I'll get more for what I want to pay if I stick with getting a non-luxury but fully loaded. For example, I was looking at the Audi A3, but you couldn't get heated seats and nav without spending close to 40K. So I've been looking at the new Civic, and even just a new Elantra. I also was checking out the Mazda3, but I hate the nav screen and dash overall.

If anyone has any suggestions/opinions I am all-ears. Going the used route is not high on my list, though, so not much persuasion to be done there. It might make sense, but just not my preference.

I come from a family that's pretty much all about Nissans. My pops bought a 2016 fully loaded Maxima that, honestly, is nice as ****. Love the cockpit seating especially. That's probably towards the top end of your price range, so you could step down a bit and still get an awesome car.

I'd recommend looking at Altimas. I leased one for three years before I bought a Rogue a few months ago. They're nice. They're reliable. They're comfortable. They're affordable. And while the city gas mileage was average, I was pulling 37-40MPG on the highway. They're about to release the 2017 Altima which is supposed to have a mid-cycle refresh look, so you might want to check that out.

Both the Maxima and Altima are quite a bit bigger than what I was ideally looking for (by about a foot in length), but I'll check them out. Haven't even given them a thought. Thanks!

The one thing I'd consider with any vehicle that it is almost never worth it to splurge for a native nav system. I have one in my SUV, and I only upgraded to that package for some of the other features it came with (notably, the top-down 360 camera that makes parking a breeze). But, I almost never use it because its slower, clunkier, and doesn't update. Instead, I transferred my phone mount from my Altima (iOttie makes really good ones for about $15-20) and almost exclusively use Google Maps. It's free, it gives you reliable real-time updates, and it's easier to use IMO.

A guy in the complex where I work just bought a brand new Ford Focus RS.. such a great looking car, sounds awesome as well. I heard that they are in such high demand in Wisconsin that many dealers have been selling them at $7,000-$10,000 over MSRP.

Yeah, the Focus RS is a fast little car. An STI wanna B. Nice to see competition in the Rally Racing AWD category especially since the EVO has left.

I love that you got an RS7 and were like, "meh, needs more power."

:)

Kurt, would you (or did you) consider getting a Tesla P90D/100D? I had a chance to drive one with ludicrous mode last year and thought it was incredible (but also way over my budget). Amazing a car that big and heavy can move like that...I suppose the RS7/M5 might be the only things that size which are comparable.

Well when I ordered the RS7, the P90D still wasn't out yet. I was down to the Tesla P85D and the RS7 at that time. Motor Trend just called the Audi the fastest 4 door sedan ever made. I also knew I could eventually mod the Audi with its twin turbos so I went that way. I think the problem with that decision has been people either know I am crazy fast or else they think I am driving an A7 so no one ever wants to race me. People used to want to race me in my CTS-V all the time. Now I get nothing. It is kind of a let down but I bet Tesla drivers get that treatment a lot too.

My business partner owns an M5 btw and its not that good. Too much power for two wheels and super hard to launch correctly. To effectively use that much power off the line you need to get some flared fenders and super fat rear tires maybe.

What's crazy though is how much cars have improved in the last decade and the improvements seem to be accelerating. In ten more years, $50k cars might be doing 3 second 0-60 times. GTR's were ground breaking doing 3.6 not long ago. Now those original GTR's are slow.

Nice Kurt. Love to be able to invest that much into my car. Wife says no. Very nice ride, though the Tesla is my dream car. I cannot wait for battery tech to improve. Still a couple of years away from that MIT battery tech to reach cars. My next car will be an electric high performance type I suspect.

Came from a modified G37xS. I wanted to get the RS5 or stoop to the S5 :) . Wife loved it but didn't approve. I moved on to the STI. She approved both the cost of the car and the fact that 10-15k would be put into it over time. Which, still being cheaper than the RS5 or even the S5.

I get challenged to race all the time, never do. Much the opposite of you...wonder why...heh. My STI, although being a little bit fast off the line, that isn't it's sweet spot and it's too hard on the clutch for my tastes. Now, get into the turns and curves? That's the deal.

I am generally not a fan of high horsepower RWD cars. Very hard to get power to the road especially through turns. Once I went AWD I was like dam. Once I went Subaru AWD then it was like game on. Far superior to the Infiniti IMO. But that's another discussion.

Hey Chapter I'm into vintage motorcycles (metric) and found running NGK Iridium plugs really improved performance. I gave them a try in my '05 Forester and they made a HUGE improvement in performance, especially acceleration.

Any suggestions for an SUV under 20k, mostly for winter use? I'm not driving my M240 in this mess.

By the way, the M240 is the best car ever made for the money. Holy snit!

New or used?

Chevy has some decently priced SUV's but they are the base models for under 20k

Might be a little over your price range if you want newish but my uncle has a Hyundai Tucson and loves it.

Put a deposit down on the day of the Tesla announcement, so I'm probably 100k or so on the list. I will only get it if the full tax credit is available but still not completely sold even at that point. Anyone have thoughts? Not a huge car guy but seemed like great value if truly under 30G with the credit.
