Thank god for Tiger King

working my way thru Ozark now

I've been watching a lot of series lately, one I'd recommend that I'm sure some of you guys have seen is Haunting At Hill House. Mike Flanagan is one of the best horror directors out there right now. Its going to be an anthology series with a new story next season too, I'm more excited for that than any other show.

Finished the New Pope and boy was it weird and sometimes hard to follow. Still thoroughly enjoyed it, but not as much as the 1st season. It just felt really lacking without much of Law's character until the last 3-4 episodes.

I’m half way through the first season and it is an incredible show. One of my favorites right now.

I keep telling myself, okay, that’s the best it’s going to get, and it just gets better.

Yep. Hard to describe the show but I felt the same you did. Not as emotionally connected to the second season but still engaging. The morality of if, allegory, the themes in current culture it explored made it worth it. That, and the acting was superb. Loved the styling, sets, and clothes.

I made it through two episodes before I had decided I've seen enough. I enjoy my fair share of trash TV, but Tiger King just creeped me out.

I don't really get the Tiger King obsession beyond the fleeting "oh, weird rednecks doing weird, dumb **** is kinda funny" moment that lasts for about 20 minutes (at least for me). It seems like one of those documentaries that only becomes this famous/meme-worthy because of the sheer number of people telling other people about it and it just keeps spreading, which I hope people understand the irony considering the current situation....

Yeah who would ever find a show with:
- arson
- animal attacks
- cults
- murder
- illegal exotic animal trade
- fraud
interesting?

p.s. also open marriages and group relationships
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Well captivating is not the same thing as redemptive.

Tiger King is popular because it is about a group of people beyond what most of us perceived as possible. There was a zoo with a gay, polygamist, redneck, mulleted, country music (fake) singing meth addict. And he had a rival who was a cat lady beyond all cat ladies. The first zoo had a one armed employee, and a no legged employee. All these crazy bastards had mentors. Wild animals are involved. How can you doubt it brings in viewers and gets people talking?

If your point is that we might be better off having not watched it? You are probably right.

What's even crazier about Tiger King is that if he'd have just avoided the feud with Carol he would've become a celebrity once the guy filming the reality show got that show out there. That personality, industry, along with being controversial due to negative media brought by animal rights was going to draw ratings in the same way so many other things have over the years. Think Dog the bounty hunter, little boo boo, Duck Dynasty, Jersey Shore, etc. Once Carol kept it real on the lawsuit he should've just backed down and his whole life would've been different. Keep the back and forth going to drum up attention, but don't engage in a legal battle. Ego just got in the way. I'm also on the opinion side that he didn't start out as a bad guy with bad intentions.

Tiger King is one of those "you couldn't have scripted this if you tried" stories. I think from the moment Joe and Carole are put on-screen it's easy to see the mass appeal.

I’m going to disagree a little. I think Joe is so egomaniacal and dumb, that destruction was inevitable. You aren’t wrong, that he was very close to “famous” before becoming “infamous.” But its no small miracle he even lived as long as he has: drugs, >200 big cats, employing primarily drifters, felons, and con men, having almost no financial base, playing with explosives as a hobby, etc

Yea I don't disagree with a person like that he could flame out big time. Just saying one minor decision to back down at the beginning of all that and that show would've been a hit.

Generally agree that an egomaniac is ripe for a downfall like this. But, start a person like that with a different set of life circumstances and he could end up president, and did. As dumb as he looks running for office, he was exactly correct about america being primed to vote for a lightning rod F the establish type guy. Heck, and he was in the right state for it too, if he wasn't gay he probably would've won governor.

I like you and am not arguing. But he won 19% of the libertarian vote. Lets not pretend that was a major impact on statewide government.

Careful, I just read an article about how racist and awful that show is with it's cultural appropriation.

I also am a fan of the show and was surprised that it's good.

Thanks for clearing that up. Maybe I just wasn't watching close enough, but it seemed to me like they were insinuating or at the very least not being very transparent that the 19% was just for the Libertarian primary and not the general election. I was under the impression from watching the showthat he was the Libertarian candidate and got 19% of the total vote until you made this comment, and I looked it up.

I love Ruth so much. No way I'd be watching the show if she wasn't in it.

Just finished the season and agree completely on Ruth, what a fabulous character and acting job by Julia Garner, someone i had never seen in a role before.
