MickeyDavis wrote:Battle is loosely based on the book Vineland by Thomas Pynchon. He's 88 and his first novel in 12 years, Shadow Ticket, comes out in October.

I mention this because the plot of the book: "The novel, which is set in 1932, centers on a Milwaukee private investigator who is set adrift in Hungary while tracking the heiress to a Wisconsin cheese fortune."

I can tell you that Shams Charania won’t be reading that.

Man, I was really hoping I'd love "Task", but I really don't. It's well-acted, but I don't know what it is for me. I'm really quite bored by it.

Probably a me thing.

Benicio was fantastic.

Anyone started the Ed Gein show? If it were historically accurate I'd put up with the Ryan Murphy of it all, but what little I've read makes it sound like most of it never happened.

I will probably watch at least some of it. I would expect some "creative license" but the true story is so interesting it would suck if they insert too much fiction. Conversations and motivations would have to be fictionalized, there's no way to know. A friend of mine binged 6 episodes.

Spoiler:
He said it's a mix of fact and fiction. They show him using a chainsaw, which he never did. There are some fictional characters. He only confessed to 2 murders, the rest is speculation.

To get 8 episodes there has to be some embellishment.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I just watched the first episode. If it was a documentary on Gein it could be done in an hour, maybe 2. Since it's 8 hours and this all happened decades ago most of the stuff is just speculation and sensationalism. Since I already know the Gein story well I probably won't continue. Hunnam does a good job and captures Gein's odd voice well.

Caught Stealing - I liked it. Nice, straightforward thriller. Hard to believe it was an Aronofsky film. Austin Butler was really good. I legitimately LOL'd at the post-credits scene.

Since horror in general was a huge blindspot for the wife and I, and films we generally tried to steer clear of except in the most obvious circumstances, we've been doing solidly horror every October for the last few years. This is the list we're going to try to be getting through this year:

Wolf House
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Hour of the Wolf
The Devils
The Vanishing
Doctor Sleep
Heretic
Bring Her Back
The Shout
Dead Alive
Gremlins 2
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4
Village of the Damned (1960)
Child’s Play

Nice list. I've only seen five of those. I'm watching one a day, but so far only sticking with favorites.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Watched Bring Her Back this weekend. Highly recommended. It's what Weapons could have been.

S2E3 of English Teacher was one of the funniest sitcom episodes I've seen in a long time.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Chad Powers is funnier than the premise of the show has any business of being. Glenn Powell is a pretty solid comedic actor.

Yeah, I gave it shot b/c I like Glen Powell but its surprisingly good. Had a good feeling after that first football scene to set everything up.
