I’ve been catching up with the third season of Brockmire and binging Hulu’s Reprisal.

Reprisal is pretty damn good and the aesthetic of the whole thing is just cool. I really like it so far (~5 episodes in). Brockmire is always good and the cameos are unmatched.

I also rewatched the two seasons of Party Down. My wife had never seen it before. The cast of that show is pretty incredible today. Each episode is a who’s who of modern comedy. I still hope they bring it back someday.

I think there's a point with these superhero movies where we're just going to have to let go of any expectation of continuity outside of a direct sequel/prequel. There are just too many different sources of content with too many discrepancies about what's canon and what isn't. I mean, with Joker, I can think of at least three different origin stories off the top of my head.

Agreed, but with "Joker" it all feels very forced that it even is a Batman movie. They just called the city Gothan and gave him some vague relation to Bruce Wayne as a child. It's a "Taxi Driver" lunchbox that they slapped a Batman sticker onto. Like "10 Cloverfield Lane" it would have been more effective if they just hadn't tried to tie the story into a franchise at all. Of course it also would have made 1/6th of the gross.

At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Yeah, that looks outstanding. Absolutely in.

I never made it through season 3. Any opinions on that? I really liked the first 2 seasons, especially the 1st.

I watched Dolemite Is My Name earlier this week. Man that was a really well-made, fun movie. Murphy and Wesley Snipes absolutely stole the show.

It is an anthology but same universe. So characters/events from one season are mentioned in others. A few make appearances as younger/older versions of themselves.

I got pulled in by the WWII In Color documentary series on Netflix. I've seen so many docs about WWII that not a lot is new to me, but the colorized footage is fascinating. Also, it's a reminder of how many individual decisions and events had extraordinary consequences:

How if the French believed their own spies, they could have stopped the Nazi march westward before it ever began by bombing all of their artillery as it was stuck in a traffic jam.

Or if the US believed their own intelligence, they could have spotted the Japanese before they had a chance to take out Pearl Harbor.

Or how on the day of the attack, the American aircraft carriers were randomly away from Pearl Harbor on a training exercise. If they had been there, they would have been sunk, and it would have taken months for the US to rebuild them.

And how the entire US air fleet at Pearl Harbor were lined up on an airfield so they could be guarded against potential sabotage, which made them an incredibly easy target for the Japanese to take them all out during the attack.

Or how one US codebreaker who kept seeing Japanese references to a planned attack on "AF" determined - through a series of educated guesses - that "AF" was Midway. The Japanese attack on Midway was designed to draw in the Pacific Fleet, and the Japanese planned to destroy it, ending the Pacific war. No one believed him, until he proved that the phrase "AF" meant Midway by putting out a false announcement about a problem with the water system on Midway which Japanese spies relayed to their commanders as "a water problem on AF."

Or that US bombers were lost trying to find the Japanese fleet during the Battle of Midway and came extraordinarily close to having to abandon their attack because of low fuel, until all of the bombers randomly spotted the fleet at the same time. Not only was that a miracle, but what's even more extraordinary is that the Japanese had just placed all of their planes under the deck to replace their bombs with torpedoes to attack the American aircraft carriers that were stationed at Midway - leaving their aircraft carriers defenseless just as the bombers arrived and took them all out.

It's a really good series. I'm about halfway into it right now.

Personally I didn't think it was bad in 10CL, even at the end. But I get your point.

How about the Nazis being all hopped up on meth when they invaded France?

I know! That's a detail I had never heard before I saw that episode. It makes sense considering that they were up for 3 days straight blitzing their way to Paris.

Oscar winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Guerrilla) has signed on to write, direct and executive produce an untitled musical drama for Showtime, which has received a straight-to-series order. On the project, originally announced in July with a series commitment, he joins executive producers Alicia Keys and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land). Pasek and Paul also will contribute music to the series, produced by Fox 21 Television Studios. Marc Platt (La La Land), R.J. Cutler and Adam Siegel also executive produce.

The as-yet untitled series, which centers on an emotionally complex family story that spans generations and threatens the fabric of the community in present-day Milwaukee, will be written and directed by Milwaukee native Ridley.

Just kidding. I only rock with stories that spark unwarranted controversy. Mine's is a Netflix joint.

I don't think I've seen anyone's top 10 lists of 2019 yet. What did you guys enjoy?

1. Parasite
2. Waves
3. Pain and Glory
4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
5. Uncut Gems
6. The Two Popes
7. 1917
8. The Irishman
9. The Beach Bum
10. Marriage Story

I was going forth between a number of movies for the last few. HM: "Little Women," "The Last Black Man in San Francisco," "The Farewell"

I saw The Irishman.

I'm pretty sure that's the only non-kid movie I saw this year. I used to laugh at people like me.

My wife and I have made a plan to watch Marriage Story. Should happen by Memorial Day.
