Re: Indiana Pacers Draft Pick Watch Thread
Finally some actual updates from the DX gang: https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/30280664/nba-draft-intel-latest-top-picks-trades-lottery
For those that don't have ESPN+, some cliff notes:
- LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, and James Wiseman appear to have locked themselves in as the top 3 picks in the draft, with teams assuming LaMelo will be the #1 pick. One potential complication is that teams came away from the Edwards/Maxey pro day disappointed in Edwards (seems like this could definitely be posturing from teams hoping he slides).
- Teams potentially looking to trade up into the top 3: Chicago, Detroit, and Oklahoma City
- Picks 4-9 are expected to be, in some order, Deni Avdija, Onyeka Okongwu, Obi Toppin, Isaac Okoro, Tyrese Haliburton, and Patrick Williams. Williams is mentioned as the biggest winner of the draft process so far, as he's now in the mix to go #4 overall after being a fringe lottery pick when the season ended. If he doesn't go #4 and if Detroit doesn't trade up, teams have been penciling Williams in at #7 for them.
- Detroit is considered one of the more interesting teams to watch as they've been considering trading up, trading down, trading out of the draft entirely, and trading Blake Griffin.
- Picks 10-20 in some order: Devin Vassell, Killian Hayes, Aaron Nesmith, Tyrese Maxey, Precious Achiuwa, RJ Hampton, Kira Lewis, and Saddiq Bey. Other guys that could potentially sneak into the top 20 are Aleksej Pokusevski, Cole Anthony, Jalen Smith, and Josh Green. Basically everyone picking in this range has discussed trading their pick.
- Picks 21-30 are expected to favor upperclassmen/guys that are ready to play right away. The main risers are Jordan Nwora, Malachi Flynn, Desmond Bane, and Xavier Tillman.
No mention of Tyrell Terry at all in here as DX seems to continue to view him as a 2nd rounder, though they'll be releasing their first mock draft in months on Wednesday.

If Hayes drops past 10 I really want us to trade up for him.

Wouldn't really put anyone as a Tier 1 prospect in this draft class, and even weirder to me that Ball would be viewed as a consensus at this point, although I do like his potential more than Lonzo...

Months ago I had looked at Pelton's WARP numbers and I think LaMelo was like a top 5 prospect dating back to the Oden/Durant draft.
Edit: Just found the old list I had jotted down:
1. Luka Doncic
2. Anthony Davis
3. Zion Williamson
4. Kenneth Faried
5. DeJuan Blair
6. LaMelo Ball
7. Kevin Love
8. Blake Griffin
9. James Harden
10. Kyrie Irving
11. DeMarcus Cousins
12. Steph Curry
13. Kevin Durant
14. Michael Beasley
15. Ricky Rubio
Tyrese Haliburton is #22.

Love the passive aggressive cold war between Simmons/Russillo and Givony/Schmitz over LaMelo Ball. Just say each other’s names you dorks!

So is Arturs Kurucs just not an NBA prospect? Not even sneaking on anyones top 60? Might lack a position size wise but his game looks pretty good.

I haven’t really listened to their pods in awhile, what’s the context here?

We'll see who's all there and I'm firmly for rolling the dice on Woodard's upside (and high downside), but I'd be very happy if we got Yam regardless. Fearless competitor with a lot of creativity, will not be outworked, rising skill level.

I’d guess he’ll be around the 5-10 range of who is available at our pick but I like him a lot honestly. I just also like a lot of other guys in this draft.

Woodard ~ Richard Jefferson vibe? Only watched him a little

So I guess I have one hard and fast draft opinion: I think Toppin and Halliburton should be top two in this class.

I think Toppin is gonna be a disaster on defense, and he's 22 already. I'm way lower on him than most.

I'm still hoping Maxey falls right into our laps. High floor, high ceiling.

Yeah he’s probably outside my top 10 personally.

Good athlete with a strong build, but his shooting was pretty bad as a college freshman, and he's a 6'3 shooting guard. I like his potential, but he really needs to dramatically improve his jump shot to help Milwaukee.

I buy his shot, but can understand the pause there, especially as a C&S guy. Off the dribble, I think he will be very good; he had to play off-ball a lot with Quickley & Hagans, and it took awhile for him to find his groove. I think he has the best combo of functional strength/athleticism and finishing balance in this class, is a POA terror, and has the clutch gene. Late clock with the ball in his hands, he can make things happen. Context is very important with him, recommend finding some of his EYBL stuff, and his latest pro day. He's also just a fantastic kid with a tireless work ethic. Kind of a bigger, better shooting Bledsoe with a proper head on his shoulders.
Felt very similarly about Mitchell in his class.
EDIT: His strength and ~6'6.75" wingspan should help him defend 1's & 2's.

Yeah, Mitchell would be the absolute ceiling, but stat guys say Mitchell is overrated aside from his good defense. The Bucks need shooters around Giannis. That's the problem with Bledsoe.
