While I agree teams would be foolish to pass on Giannis, Dumont and the Mavs in particular, seemed pretty scarred from the blow back they received from trading Luka, that I think they would give major pause to moving another younger budding star for another older Forward, even if Giannis is 10 times the player AD is. I think Dumont has regrets and would walk back the Luka trade if he could.

Maybe, but it still comes down to the details. Luka, a proven star, for Davis, was foolish. Giannis for Flagg is a whole different story.

Not saying you're wrong and that the difference in scenarios is vast, I just still have a hard time seeing it with the Mavs specifically for Flagg. Through his first 25 games in the league, he's averaging eerily similar stats to Rookie Luka. So while not out of the realm of possibility, I still think it's a major pause to think on that deal from the Mavs perspective and if they'd want to put their fan base through another win-now move on an older player who's starting to show signs of wear of his own. And with reports of them shopping AD, I'm guessing they want to go younger and Kyrie will be next on the trade block.

So I'm going to go ahead and call this. There is no yana's trade. As I read the situation initially this is almost entirely a media fabrication to farm clicks and Giannis has not clarified himself on it for two reasons:

1. He doesn't want to dignify the bull
2. He wants ownership to feel a little pressure

I wish I shared your optimism. If everything was a big joke I think his demeanor would be more lighthearted. Lots of cryptic stuff. Most of the crap in the media is clickbait, but the mood just feels different with the way things have transpired. If he were 100% committed he'd just come out and say that. He planted the seed years ago about saying he wants to play for essentially a finals contender. All of his dudes except Thanasis and BP are gone. He's probably been struggling internally about remaining the "one team" star vs. forging his next chapter elsewhere.

I don't buy the pressure on ownership argument. The Bucks have one asset left as a result of trying to appease him, and their only tradable guys likely won't net any sort of positive return. Apparently he likes Doc. So is Giannis saying please trade that 2031 pick to try to get one more piece to the puzzle?

The Bucks confirming his desire to be traded only diminishes his value and tarnishes his image. They have to handle the situation precariously and probably feel a responsibility to do so given what he's meant to the franchise. Again, hope somehow you're right. We'll see.

The one deal that should happen is staring everyone in the face.

Dallas has Flagg and then an aging Kyrie and Anthony Davis. The timelines for success don't match. Flagg won't blossom for a few years.

Giannis for Flagg and the Mavs #1 this year. The Mavs have little else in draft capital.

Not if they want to win in the next few years. Most owners don't have horizons beyond a year or two. That's how they run their businesses (unfortunately); on a month to month basis. Why do you think the Bucks have no draft picks?

Posters are so jaded when it comes to Giannis. He is and will be, for the next four years or more, one of the two best players in the world. I don't want to get rid of Giannis because of this, but if he wants out, any team is beyond foolish to turn down a chance at Giannis.

Giannis hasn't explicitly asked out...but his people are discussing with the Bucks is "whether his best fit is staying or elsewhere."

This all smacks of Giannis wanting not to be the bad guy - he wants to maintain plausible deniability in case the team either turns it around (persuading him to stay) or he gets moved (and then he can say, "it wasn't my idea!")

Giannis cannot act like he has no agency here. Let's stay Stein's reporting his correct - that the Bucks are not shopping Giannis and won't until he explicitly says "trade me." (I don't believe that for a second, but let's play along). At some point, he's going to make a very public decision about whether to stay in Milwaukee for the rest of his career. If he wants out, that'll come in form of a trade demand, or a decision to say "thanks, but no thanks" about an extension. He can't avoid being the bad guy in that scenario. It just comes with the territory.

My strong suspicion is that Giannis has pretty much indicated to the Bucks that he wants out, and the Bucks are shopping him (quietly, as is in everyone's interests), and all of this stuff leaked to Stein (undoubtedly from Horst) is about helping the Bucks maintain some leverage in trade negotiations. Giannis being like "who, me?" is icing on the cake, in that scenario.
