I definitely agree these players don't need the combine. Its a savvy business move and they have more to lose than gain.

However, in my opinion it makes them look weaker. If I was a top pick I'd want to show everybody up. By not going it makes it seem like they are not as competitive. Just my opinion though.

Why go to the Senior Bowl? Why go to the NFL combine? Why do a pro day? Why do 98% of players go to the NBA combine? Why even work out for any teams? Nah, they aren't better then the combine. It's something most every player goes to, something every NBA team will be at, something that they should be going to. They don't want to partake in certain events in it so be it, but they should attend. They've been doing things they don't need to do to better their NBA prospects for years and they'll continue to do so for many more years, this shouldn't be any exception.

Your position stands to fluctuate exponentially more in the NFL draft than in the NBA draft. You can feasibly drop from being a top 5 pick in the NFL draft to out of the first round just by not showing up to the combine, because there are so many more draftees to compete with and so many more unknowns.

I'd rather maintain my spot in the top 3 and risk not being taken #1 than risk my spot in the top 3.

This is my thinking as well. It makes the top prospects appear too complacent. And in a draft where teams are banking so much on potential, displaying a lack of desire or competitiveness just seems detrimental to a teams' perception of you.

Hopefully this doesn't become a trend.

Are you sure? Look at the numbers. The biggest rewards are at the top of the rookie scale, and the rolloff is steep. Dropping out of the top three is less punitive than landing the #1 spot is rewarding. I think the right move is to exploit this asymmetry and go for the gold.

And that's before thinking about what sitting out says about you and your competitive nature (or lack of it), or about the prestige of being #1.

Milwaukee sits with the best odds at the top overall pick. Not saying it has anything to do with the situation, but this is could be a year in which top prospects won't be incredibly broken up if they don't go #1.

But Parker is from Chicago, of course he would want to play for the Bucks since it's close to Chicago

Everybody wants to go #1 and the Lakers could be picking there for all anybody knows. I sincerely doubt the Bucks have anything to do with this.

Nobody is going to want to go #1 if the Lakers have the #2.

You're like three iterations deep in the logic underpinning this supposition that players are skipping the combine because Bucks. The reality is that if they don't want the Bucks to draft them, they don't know how to position themselves for that. If the weather man says it's going to rain next week, I don't open my umbrella.

This has nothing to do with the Bucks at all. It's players thinking it protects their stock if they skip. If Philly has the top odds right now, the same thing occurs. To say otherwise is lunacy.

Most lotto guys only do the measurements. I'm surprised about McDermott, Ennis and Stauskas.
