Are there financial implications to being bought out prior to waiver versus just being waived? If a team picks up a guy on waivers who was bought out by the waiving team (presumably at a discounted price), would it be cheaper than if they picked up a guy off waivers who was just waived?

If a player is picked up off waivers, the team picking him off waivers acquires that player's contract. A player sits on waivers for 48 hours. If no one picks that player up off waivers, they are an UFA.

If a player is bought out, that player is now an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign for any amount with a team of their choosing.

There is no such thing as a guy who was bought out sitting on waivers.

This is incorrect.

Blake Griffin was bought out and signed with the Nets after he cleared waivers. He was bought out on March 5th and sat on waivers for 48 hours.

Forward Blake Griffin has cleared free agency waivers and the six-time NBA all-star has signed with the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.Mar 7, 2021

There is no such thing as a player not sitting on waivers.

No, skones is right. The way buyouts are reported confuses the issue. Player and team come to an agreement before the player is exposed to waivers, then the player is exposed to waivers, then the buyout agreement is consummated if the player clears waivers. If the player is claimed, there's no need for the buyout because the new team pays full freight. In Griffin's case, the order of the operations didn't matter much because nobody was ever going to claim him and assume responsibility for the rest of his contract. Much less true with Birch, who is a 3m expiring and worth that.

Agreed, but the player sill sits on waivers for 48 hours. I may have misunderstood Skones.

If remove the obvious, Klay Thompson from the list of SG the last 6 years, which of those guys are better than Donte? That is why I think the point you are trying to make is, well, not a good one. Or said another way, which of the guys other Klay struck fear into the heart of their opponent?

Serious right now? Sure ok let's do this then.

1st - Donte is a tweener guard Kyrie will be faster and get past while Harden can just go through him. Danny Green is 6'6 real SG size and a former all defensive NBA to boot. Plus he is a historic, consistent big nuts playoff shooter. Donte can't even be consistent in a regular season road trip.

2nd - Powell is a tweener too but one that can flat out score idk what to tell you other than I'd trade Donte for him in a heartbeat.

3rd - your list is irrelevant unless LeBron and Kyrie/AD are coming to play with Donte. Here's the list that's relevant to whether someone would give up their first for Donte. Where does he fit on this list?

https://fadeawayworld.net/2021/02/18/ranking-the-best-nba-shooting-guards-by-tiers-2/

Oh that's right, he's not even on it because only Milwaukee thinks he's good and worth a first round pick. Tier 7 maybe before he gets mentioned? 31 shooting guards get mentioned and Donte isn't even there because some teams have backups better than him, we see them all the time lighting us up but you're blind to it because you're up to you're elbows deep in Donte's advanced stats circle jerk juice.

Last 4 playoffs Danny Green shot 33.9, 32.8, 25.0, 34.2 from 3. Year before that: 51.1.

Right, defense toughens a lot in the playoffs.. ask the Bucks. Now let's look deeper for a min: his last playoff series last year he had a game 1 for 8 and 0 for 4. He indeed didn't help them win those games with his offense and they needed 6 games to win the series. Well in 4 of those games he hit big nuts shots on good efficiency against playoff defense and 4 games is actually enough to win the series. With Pat and Donte it seems opposite. They have 1 outstanding game and 4 clunkers offensively and 4 is enough to lose the series. Can they do it 4 out of 6 games against playoff defense? No. we would be happy Ashley claims if they could though. They haven't proven that, have they. Percentages in that case were completely irrelevant to them winning a championship, weren't they.

So now, let me tell you your problem with objectively evaluating Donte. Same problem, you look too close. You watch him everyday then pull out your microscope to find a little detail stat that seems to prove what you think you see which is that he's a good NBA SG. What you should do instead is step back and get the bigger overall picture and I'll draw it for you- now don't take a microscope to this for exact numbers because then you'll miss the point the same way again. When Donte was drafted he wasn't a top 60 SG, he didn't even play. Every year he got better, earned more minutes and let's say he climbed the ranks 10 spots per year. The problem is that each year there is another draft and 3 or 4 new guys come in that are already better than him - top picks. At this rate he might get in that top tiers list in 2 more years or maybe he won't. So now looking at that wider angle, does it make sense for a team to trade their 1st for him now being only one year from his next contract? No, the clock is ticking on him.

So this is just a matter of order of operations, then. Waive. If not claimed, effectuate the buyout.

There is no option to simply buy someone out without exposing them to waivers?

Is Patrick mccaw any good? Wasn't he a semi-recent first round pick? The man does have three rings I believe.

Damn man, it's like they said "CHL doesn't hate the 'Whiter Donte' nickname enough; let's try to get some more mileage out of this one."

Can we just go with Fair Jordan or something? To the best of my knowledge, that nickname isn't taken, although I have to assume it's been used many times before.

Your point(though it appears to be shifting all over the place) was that the Nets aren't worried about Donte on offense. My point was no team in the finals worried about the starting and back up SG in the last 6 years other than Klay Thompson.

You can do whatever gymnastics you want with that information.

DDV should theoretically do well defending against Irving. Harden goes through everyone. Danny green has been a meme for the last couple years.

You just tried to cite some random website to try to prove your point. Is this real life? Only Milwaukee thinks he's good and worth a first round pick? So you think he's not even worth a 1st round pick, despite being a mid 1st himself and only increasing his stock.

No, he was a second round pick by the Bucks who they sold to GSW.
He has some defensive flexibility. Not bad as a 11-12th guy on your roster.

The Bucks are close, but need one more addition to the rotation.

Available is a player who averaging 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals per 36, with a 58 TS%, including 45% from 3, on high volume per 36.

He's a raw defender, but he could replace the Forbes role, as Forbes use is very match up specific. He has better size and length than Forbes.

Should we give this guy a shot?
