I actually think Pryce gave one of the best performances of the year and may have voted for him over Phoenix, although he was plenty worthy. Obviously very happy with the "Parasite" win as it was my favorite of the year as well, but even aside from that it's just been a long time coming for a foreign film to finally win BP.

Just watched Joker yesterday, still processing....but is the joke at the end, that the doctor wouldn't understand that his life wasn't a tragedy or comedy but that he was on the heroes journey in a really, really, really messed up way?

Pryce and Hopkins gave a tour de force in Two Popes, and walked away with nothing. Not that I had a major issue with Pitt or Phoenix winning, but I thought they were wonderful and I wish they would have gotten some love.

I watched it yesterday too. As someone who has had close family members deal with mental illness (and my wife is a psychologist), I always have my spidey sense up when I see it portrayed in films. I thought they did a nice job, albeit a little punch on the nose in regards to the Thomas Wayne character, showing how mentally ill people are often misunderstood and left at the margins of society...then people wonder why they end up doing what they do. But...I do think they fed the stereotype of the violent and scary crazy person. Most are actually the victims of violence (which they also showed) rather than perpetrators. Frankly speaking, I think you'd have a really difficult time sticking to the source material without the stereotyping so they did the best they could in that regard.

At the end of the day I like the film. I always wanted to see a marvel movie set in a realistic world where it's actually a plausible plotline as opposed to "kid gets bit by radioactive spider and then becomes part spider and fights another guy who had an industrial accident and also gained super powers". They achieved that with this film. Great cinematography (oscar nominated) and Phoenix gave an amazing performance. His Oscar was well earned.

I mean, yeah, no one will ever turn down a nomination. But a nomination is awesome until you don't win. Then it really doesn't matter. Few remember who was nominated in the acting categories. Most only remember the winners.

I feel less bad for Hopkins as he's already won an Oscar - though he's absolutely on my short list of favorite actors of all time and I thought he was great in TTP. Pryce isn't on that short list for me, but he's a very good actor - he was positively loathsome as the High Sparrow in GOT and I thought he was really good embodying the role of Pope Francis.

I don't know about that. They promote movies all the time with "Starring Oscar-nominated so and so". If you make the top 5 or however many it is in a subjective category like acting then you have been recognized as elite.

I think some of it has to do with luck as well. If actor A is asked to play something that demonstrates real range (i.e. Joker, Judy, Ray, Freddy Mercury, Winston Churchill, etc etc.) and actor B is playing a character but not really a transformational one, actor A almost always gets the nod simply because it seems more impressive on the surface even though performance-wise, actor B kills it. At least that's how it seems to work to me.

I agree with you though that it's a shame only one person can "win". Also, agree that Pryce is really, really good. he's one of those guys that if I see his name in the credits, I'll watch regardless of what it is.

On a completely separate note - I hadn't seen "Bombshell," but HOLY **** I didn't know that Charlize Theron played Megyn Kelly. The resemblance was remarkable. The makeup artists thoroughly deserved an Oscar for their work.

Did anyone watch His Dark Materials? Finished catching up on my other HBO shows and might give this a chance.

Almost done with my rewatch of Halt and some of the episodes are still every bit as devastating as they were the first time around.

Fun fact: I was cast as Bill Gates in Season 1 for the episode where they unveil the laptop at a hotel suite party. I'm in the scene, but they opted against filming the big part where I would have been identified as Gates. Thus, I'm just a guy at the party who maybe looks like him.

I think you're right that it helps - though I think it's a bit less about advertising the nom and more about the nom opening doors for future casting opportunities.

I didn't have much of an issue with Phoenix winning. He had a tougher role to nail, IMO. I liked Ledger's Joker a lot more, but Joaquin's role seemed so much more physically and emotionally demanding than any of the other nominees. I'm not a fan of his eccentricities, tbh, but I agree that roles like that tend to get more recognition and I don't take issue with it in this case. Him shouting out his late brother was a nice way to end his speech, too.

Spoiler:
Unless this is just something to throw the viewers off:

1. It was pretty damn obvious that Hopper was alive given that he "died" off screen and "the American" was mentioned in the post-credits scene"
2. It is kinda weird that they did this in the trailer.

I love the books, and went in with some apprehension - the movie left an awful taste - but I ended up liking the show quite a bit. Similar to the Witcher, I think HDM did a lot right when it comes to laying the groundwork for a great show, but the execution was a bit up and down Season 1. The visuals, world design, and casting are all quite strong, but there are some bizarre editing decisions that betray the BBC/Dr.Who influence on the first season (soap opera style rapid cuts and scene changes). The narrative is strong enough, imo, to withstand some front-loaded exposition dumping, but be warned, it starts a bit slow. In what I hope is a good sign for S2, the season improves as it goes, and I think they stick the landing in E8.

Book reader complaint:
Spoiler:
My biggest complaint is how Daemons are handled. I understand that the CGI is expensive, but their presence isn't really felt for much of the season, and this has a ramping negative effect on how narrative and emotional beats land in the second half of the season. A daemon is literally an external manifestation of your soul, not just a talking pet. The show struggles to really make this clear, and it detracts from sequences that are supposed to be infused with existential horror.
