Pryce and Hopkins gave a tour de force in Two Popes, and walked away with nothing. Not that I had a major issue with Pitt or Phoenix winning, but I thought they were wonderful and I wish they would have gotten some love.
They got nominated....that's something.
I mean, yeah, no one will ever turn down a nomination. But a nomination is awesome until you don't win. Then it really doesn't matter. Few remember who was nominated in the acting categories. Most only remember the winners.
I feel less bad for Hopkins as he's already won an Oscar - though he's absolutely on my short list of favorite actors of all time and I thought he was great in TTP. Pryce isn't on that short list for me, but he's a very good actor - he was positively loathsome as the High Sparrow in GOT and I thought he was really good embodying the role of Pope Francis.
I don't know about that. They promote movies all the time with "Starring Oscar-nominated so and so". If you make the top 5 or however many it is in a subjective category like acting then you have been recognized as elite.
I think some of it has to do with luck as well. If actor A is asked to play something that demonstrates real range (i.e. Joker, Judy, Ray, Freddy Mercury, Winston Churchill, etc etc.) and actor B is playing a character but not really a transformational one, actor A almost always gets the nod simply because it seems more impressive on the surface even though performance-wise, actor B kills it. At least that's how it seems to work to me.
I agree with you though that it's a shame only one person can "win". Also, agree that Pryce is really, really good. he's one of those guys that if I see his name in the credits, I'll watch regardless of what it is.
