So my parents house had a fire January 2nd and they have to move out for 9-12 months, long story short my sister and niece are currently living with them still and my niece had a goldfish in a small 2 gallon tank. This poor little fella could barely move around so Monday night I bought just a simple standard 20 gallon tank. I work for a water treatment company so I've heard using RO water can be beneficial (my RO has a filter that also adds TDS). After further review it sounds like the tank needs to cycle for a month or two before adding fish. Well after seeing the poor goldfish last night my 3 year old really wanted to put him in the new tank, so I figured what the hell. (This was before I read about the 1-2 month wait, the tank says 24 hours go figure lol)

Basically I'm looking for suggestions on what type of vegetation and driftwood to put in there. Also it came with basic LED lights, should I get grow lights instead? Do I really need to wait that full time and is there a way to speed up the process? I will add fish eventually also looking for suggestions. Keeping it a cold water tank or add a heater? Suggestions on a heater? Suggestions on coldwater and warm water fish? I read goldfish arent a big fan of warm water but can handle it sometimes. (This was a goldfish won at a fair so take that for what its worth) I'm a noobie so any help is appreciated

Great choice you made. Goldfish are often overlooked in terms of space. An adult goldfish needs ideally 20 gallons. If you take good care of them can live up to 20 years. Temperature : approx 65 to 75 (Fahrenheit) but there is a bit of +- room as well.

For basic care tips you can print her this : https://www.aqueon.com/-/media/Files/Aqueon-NA/US/Care-Sheets/Fish/AQ_Goldfish_Apr17_hq%20pdf.pdf?la=en

For Advanced Tips for you : https://www.csh.rit.edu/~tonyl/goldfish/testarea/advcare.htm

3 or 4 mixed male and female danios (zebrafish) would work as tank mates. You can even get the glofish ones but I've noticed they aren't as healthy as the "wild type" ones(TLs or ABs/TuaBs). It's important to get mixed male and female so they don't start fighting with each other and the goldfish. I would just keep it cold water but try to make sure the tank temp stays pretty consistent. I have 4 that are at end of life (probably around 5 years now which is ridiculous). As for water changes, I know goldfish are a bit more finicky than danios so I would probably do what they say. I legit 100% change the water using tap and dechlorinate only adjusting the temperature to match. I get a lot of algae growth so I need to clean the tank more frequently than I'd like. I don't use real vegetation but have a castle and fake vegetation so they can hide if they want. They are schooling fish though so they don't really need to hide much. Both eat the same food mostly too. I worked in a zebrafish lab for around 10 years, dealing with everything from water maintenance to embryo viability to experiments. Good luck on your venture.

Coming down with a cold and I leave for Barbados early Saturday morning. Curious if anyone has a routine the do to nip colds in the butt. Currently having dayquil during the day, an EmergenC every day, lots of water and a fair amount of sleep. I unfortunately can't take off from work.

I unleash hell on my body if I feel a cold coming on

Lots of chicken bone broth and just soup in general, oranges (including the peel! even though I think the vitamin C myth has mostly been disproven?), gargling with hot salt water a couple times/day. Medicinally, I usually elect for mucinex and/or nyquil. Nasal spray can also really help clear the sinuses but you don't want to overuse it. And obviously, lots of fluids.

One time a friend's dad made me tea, and I want to say added lemon/honey/cayenne pepper, though I may be forgetting something. That **** made me feel like a new man, but I've never replicated.

Hope it subsides by Saturday.

The best Starburst flavors are yellow and orange. Fight me.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

I'm with you on yellow but orange should just be put immediately in the trash.

Your lady eats all the reds and pinks, leaves you with the yellow and orange. This is what you try to convince yourself of to not flip out on her inconsiderate ways. I am in the same boat bro.

Any flavor but yellow, which should be outlawed and anyone who likes yellow should be punted into the sun.

I don’t think there’s a silver bullet, but there are a few things I’ve learned over the years (especially after having kids and just laying around for days isn’t an option). If you are stuffy in the nose or chest, something like a strong variety of Sudafed or allergy medicine like Benadryl works better to dry you out than Day/NiQuil or Mucinex (which is worthless imo). Also, don’t skimp on the ibuprofen. Helps aches, headaches, sore throats, etc and you can take a decent amount a day safely. Vitamin C and immune boosters are fine, but if you are already sick they won’t do anything for you. Cepacol is ok for sore throats.

Good luck, hope you feel better for your trip.
