Curious to know what it's like for someone who hasn't read the books.

Should I read them first?

Nah just go for it. It's been a pretty faithful adaptation so far, I don't think you need to read the books beforehand.

anybody watching The Rehearsal? It's Nathan Fielders new show on HBO. My favorite line from episode 1:

It’s moments like these I curse the Chinese for inventing gunpowder
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

That's fair. It is pretty consistently over-the-top silly, while still being very smart about it. The reason is jealousy, resentment, and Howard just being such a satisfying target. I personally loved that the silly Howard storyline and the fascinatingly dark Lalo storyline converged in the way they did. A stretch, but a delicious payoff.

Spoiler:
I thought they were messing with Howard in order to get that Sandpiper settlement to go through more quickly.

They were. That was the whole point.

That's what they told themselves to justify what they were doing. It maybe started as the whole point, but it became so much more, IMO. Kim especially needed to feed her dark side.

Directed by Steve James who did "Hoop Dreams," so it legit should be good.

For sure.

That was the whole point initially.

Really enjoyed “Prey.”

Yes, I know I’m the guy that has posted in this thread at least 5 times how lame sequels and prequels are.

Really good use of period and nature to ground the film in reality, when of course there is nothing actually realistic about it.

Maybe not a popular opinion but I saw Top Gun Maverick on Thursday and Prey tonight, and Prey was the better movie for me hands down. It might just be a matter of preference but the character development was so much better in Prey and that hooked me.

Prey was indeed great. The best predator movie they’ve made since the original.

Paul was great in Kingdom, he definitely has convincing serial killer vibes. I'll have to check out Black Bird.

Bullet Train was a lot of dumb fun. Not sure what the critics are thinking with their rankings, I got exactly what I was expecting from the director of deadpool 2, in fact, it was probably funnier than expected.

I enjoyed Prey more than Nope. I wish it were in theatres.

I can’t compare Prey to Maverick. I loved Maverick for a different set of reasons.

I think indigenous people have more representation right now in media? I hope that keeps up. Season 2 of Reservation Dogs just started. Super interesting book on Native stand-ups called ‘We Had a Little Real Estate problem.” Expanded my cultural world view.

Season 1 of Reservation Dogs was phenomenal. We just binged it in a few days and we are going to wait until more episodes of Season 2 become available. We also just watched the first three episodes of The Bear and that’s been really great too. We’re lucky to have this many quality options for entertainment.

So I've caught up on The Rehearsal and the show just gets more and more bonkers.

I agree it was a great watch.

A few criticisms:

The animal CGI was goofy.

Tying a rope on a throwing hatchet makes no sense and didn’t even play a significant part in the movie. Just make her good at throwing hatchets and she is a legit threat.

I might be in the minority of wanting the whole thing to have been in commanche and french with subtitles. There was not much dialogue anyway, and it wasnt exactly Shakespeare plot wise to follow.

This has a legit chance to be the best 30 for 30 of all time.

Once Brothers and Two Escobars will be really, really tough to beat.

Yeah, I thought I implied that there are some really good ones and thus it would have to be really good, and has the potential to be.

I was really moved by "Once Brothers." "Two Escobars" is wild, if they would have put some of that stuff in "Narcos" the audience would have found it over the top and fictionalized (sending your hitmen out to kill a ref). The Rick Flair one was good, but is sad, sad in the way a man pretended to be something for so long he became it. The Vick one is long but really good. I'm sure I'm overlooking some really good ones. The Buster Douglas one for me, is where the medium/format is optimized (an in depth look at something we all knew was significant, but maybe didn't know the whole story... then over time, it came to represent more than we realized in the moment). 30 for 30 is best when it hits that line between "we are just talking about a sports thing" and "of course, this is bigger than sports" without overtly getting in to the second category.

Low-key, the Mat Hoffman 30-for-30 is GREAT. Good call on "Once Brothers."

Top ones for me: Ali-Holmes, Run Ricky Run, Two Escobars, The Birth of Big Air (Hoffman) and June 17, 1994.
