Speaking of potential #1 picks that I just don’t really get: Emoni Bates.

Obviously he just turned 18 a couple months ago but he simply was not the player we were sold on by the DX folks and the like.

Jabari Smith has been my #1 prospect for a while and I see nothing that's gonna change that. Chet might be too frail to cut it in the pros, but also wouldn't surprise me if we're pulling a Durant/Jokic on him and hyper-focusing on a glaring physical weakness when the skills + height combo might make it moot.

Same way I feel about Bates. He's tall, can shoot, and dribble? Sold, even if he has T-Rex arms.

Fun opening game so far
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Plossum wrote:Is Holmgren a good NBA player when he makes the step up? I heard Hollinger liken him to Porzingis the other day on the Mismatch and I just don't see it.

That comparison has never made any sense to me (partially because I've always thought Zinger sucks going back to predraft, he's just a 7'3 dude who can sorta shoot)

Holmgren to me is sorta like Joakim Noah with a J.

Also Emoni Bates just sucks. Why would anyone think he can dribble or shoot? He's super inefficient, and its not just his dimensions physically that aren't good, he would literally be less athletic than any other perimeter player in the NBA 1-3. He has a vertical more comparable to legitimately 50% of this message board than other NBA players. He was just early a super early developer who has plateaued completely since like his frosh/sophomore year of HS, skills haven't progressed and physically hes the same.

CBS is going to be pissed if they don't get Gonzaga/Duke Saturday night.

Hogs will lose next round. Celebrating a little too hard, like they're going to the FF.

That was a great game. I wanted Musselman to be the Bucks coach like, I dunno, 15 years ago? I think it was around the time we got Stotts instead. Or maybe Krystowiak. Anyways, he's done great in college and it's a good fit for his style. Did great at Nevada, and now at Arkansas too. Definite players coach. Arkansas's defense is fantastic.

Never picking Gonzaga to do anything ever again.

When Durant was a freshman, he was as frail as Holmgren but he inhaled rebounds. Always looked like the best player on the floor. Was as fluid as players a head smaller than him. I think he'll be good and nearly all scouts are unanimous in stating he has a mean streak, but I don't see #1 overall pick production. At all.

Yeah I love Musselman. He definitely needs another shot at the NBA, if he wants it.

I know Tech almost made it interesting, but that was so frustrating that it was probably the best opening 38 minutes of a game all year and I ended up turning it off with 1 minute left. It also felt like Tech was outplaying them pretty much the whole time yet every time I'd look Duke would be within 1.

I mean, they're really close and they just beat the #1 overall seed.

Durant had the same body type but avg 26/11. I've only seen a few games (early non-con and tournament), but he's mostly been anonymous outside of being a solid help side shot blocker. I just wouldn't want to be the one to take him.

Bates sucks and can't shoot.

Just a sense check on Holmgren's production:

/40 minutes he's at 21.1 points, 14.9 boards, 2.9 assists, 1.2 steals, 5.5 blocks, 69.5 TS%

Compare to Durant: 28.8, 12.4, 1.5, 2.1, 2.1, 58.7 TS%

All caveats due to the fact that Durant was in the Big 12 and not playing Pepperdine twice. I don't think anybody ever had to tell Durant to go get the ball and score.

Holmgren probably would have been better off going somewhere where the coach would have forced him into a featured role offensively. As a college coach, when you get a talent like that, I think you have a responsibility to the sport to prioritize his development over the typical deference to your moderately talented upperclassmen. The game has given you a gift horse and you are looking that mfer in the mouth.
