Its an old episode but the one about the 1904 Olympics is outstanding and a must listen.

I haven't listened to that one as of yet. I'll make a point to!

I recently listened to 'The Whiskey Rebellion' and 'Opium in America: Parts 1 and 2' (Unreal. Utterly unreal look at opium, heroine, morphine, laudenum and other pharmaceutically approved heroines from the Civil War era to modern day Phentenol. Just shocking revelation after shocking revelation) Cursory, I listened to 'Dope Lake' and 'Bunion Derby' ( one about the senator-sponsored s***tshow of the first continental foot race. Must listen in my book).

The show, imho, is a fine example of an effective means of sharing some of the sordid underbelly of our country's history. Their improvisatory comedic interludes are f'ng hilarious.

EDIT: I should also add, Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" is a history podcast from a non-historian but passionate and educated scholar about various historical events. If you are into a more serious, widely-represented, fascinating deep-dive into history...this is must-listen. His WW1 piece is so engaging and fascinating. As is his piece on the first Cuban/American conflict (pre-WWI) and the ensuing Phillipine guerilla warfare experience for America's young colonial military.

Ill have to check out the opium one that sounds interesting.

Love me some hardcore history. Its super deep ao you need be into that kind of thing or it can get boring. I was a history major for a bit in college before I realized I didnt want to teach so its right in my wheelhouse.

My favorites were the Mongolian and king of kings about the Persian empire.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

I'll have to listen to both. For a fair period of time, I was obsessed with Mongolian history after reading Jack Weatherford's 'Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World'. I've read from front to cover 'The Secret History of the Mongols'. I've listened to quite an immense amount of music from the Taklimakan desert region, north to the Altaic Mountains, and into the Mongolian steppe. Such a deeply deeply rich cultural history and, frankly, that Central Asian region at large is just steeped with influence on us Indo-Europeans. Thanks for the recommendations!

Mindhunter is solid. Not what I was expecting. Any excuse to get Anna Torv back on my TV.

I realize critics like the show but overall halt and catch fire might be the most underappreciated show of this era of TV. Its really really good.

Seems to happen to shows that have mediocre first seasons and massive improvements after that. Halt definitely falls into that category.

Maybe because I got on to it late and binged right through it but I never got the criticism of the first season.

Totally agree. I thought the first season was damn good - thank you very much. Looking forward to diving into season 2.

"Professor Marston and the Wonder Women" is the better than the actual Wonder Woman movie. It starts to drag a bit towards the finish line, but overall I really liked it.

The original Street Fighter is in my top 5 favorite movies of mine of all time. Anyone who thinks Mortal Kombat the movie is better than the Street Fighter movie should put in prison.

Saw them at the Riverside a couple months ago, Randy and Lahey both were part of the show. Pretty glad I went now.

My girlfriend and I watched it over the weekend- not at all terrible, but pretty disappointing considering what they had to work with.
It's an idea that should've gone better- you've got the history of that kind of criminology, fictionalizations of real serial killers and their real interviews within that framework, plus multiple story-lines of traditional police-procedural/whodunnit stuff for excitement. But it was somehow less than the sum of those parts.

Something was off about the larger story arc. Individual episodes and scenes were all pretty good. Probably the issue was adapting (what I assume was) a non-fiction book into a fictional TV series. I imagine it could be tough to make that work, because you don't want to ruin the true story too much or you lose what's good about it to begin with. But, you're not making a documentary either so you need some elements of fiction.

I really liked the first season and then forgot it existed for some reason? Happy to have something funny to catch up on.

It really is, they took a very overdone genre and spoofed it... and I think it works so well because they cast it bery well and everyone involved is having so much fun.

While I don’t really have any problems with Chelsea Peretti, I thought her charcter (Gina) was a little out of place and incongruent with a cop show and I have enjoyed her being gone for maternity leave. Cool that she is married to Jordan Peele, that has to be a pretty funny household.

Bob’s Burgers, I think, has the best comedy writing on network tv. Meaning Fox has two really good comedies right now, still in their prime.

Raymond Holt is on the short list for my favorite TV character. The stuff they write for Andre Braugher and his deadpan delivery kill me every episode.
