Other tournaments (March madness, fiba, etc) are entertaining because most of the teams don’t play each other otherwise. An NBA tournament doesn’t make sense because every team already plays each other. Four games against the Wizards next year, calling one a cup qualifier probably won’t make it interesting.

The first step to making fans give a **** about regular season is to make it possible to easily watch the games on TV. That part is easy. The second step is making teams actually give a **** about regular season. I dont know how to do that. I doubt the mid-season tournament is gonna do it.

How does the tournament line up with the date that players that signed new contracts during the summer can be traded? Would be pretty funny if a team in the “championship” had a player sit out because they were just traded and the incoming player needs a physical etc.

I think the Vegas part of it is cool. People will go to watch. I just can’t picture players playing as hard as a playoff game. Probably be more like an all star game where they don’t get serious until the very end.

The Championship is December 9 so before the recently signed restriction ends

Ok so GMs going to be nervously pacing the sideline hoping the guy they want to trade doesn’t get hurt in a meaningless game

I see alot of posters hating on this because it's meaningless or pointless but I haven't seen much substance of why this tournament is actually bad.

True but there isn’t typically any reason to play harder in a game in early December. A player could be held out of a game for a “hamstring” or load management before a trade in a meaningless game but it won’t be so easy with this tourney. I mean injuries will happen anyway but somebody will blame a bad injury on the meaningless tourney if it happens.

Very rarely does a team rest their player for over a month in order to not get them hurt. Teams could easily still load manage around these games and I find it hard to believe any of these will be b2bs making load management less likely

I’m not talking a month, typically teams will “rest” a player for a game or two while the terms are being finalized and agreed upon or waiting on the league to approve it

This seems like a very niche scenario you're talking about. Typically the date players can be traded again is December 15, the Final 4 is December 7 & the Championship is December 9th. So in order for what you're proposing to happen a team would have to make it to the final 4 or championship and then would also have to have a trade worked out over a week in advance of actually being able to make the trade

The biggest player incentive will be the in-season trip to Vegas

I would be extremely surprised if players care that little. The all star games basically aren’t even basketball at this point. I would expect slightly more competitive than a usual regular season game in the group stage games and very competitive but not playoff level intensity in the knockout games.

I think people just like to call things dumb. I could have lived without it but I don't have a problem with them trying it. It won't be playoff intensity but I could see some of the fringe teams like say OKC get into it. These are regular season games (except the championship) so that's the baseline of trying and I think it will be slightly higher because these guys are competors.

Well yeah making money is litterally the entire purpose of the NBA or any other professional sports leagues existence. Silver and the people in charge jobs is to try to make everyone involved more money so trying things like this is part of their job description.

I saw some of this with the play-in too, comments like 'it doesn't matter for a championship'. Like yeah probably not but crowning a champ is just a byproduct, making money is the goal of professional sports. So if they can sell these to the networks then it's a win. And personally I think the play-in has been better than expected with some fun games and a pretty good experience for the fans of these fringe playoff teams.

At this point I would like to see Patty Mills somehow get traded to every team before the season starts.

Yeah I think one thing we consistently underestimate is the baseline interest of professional basketball players in competing and winning regardless of context. Like, we don't need to worry about these guys wanting to play basketball or win games. That's pretty much their whole deal.

I think part of the idea of this tournament is breaking up the grind/monotony of the regular season a bit not just for the fans but for the players and coaches. It can be a good thing without being great or revolutionary or bearing ultimate importance.
