I thought it just means he doesn’t get the fourth year added to this extension. So the money “left” on the table is just that 27-28 is the player option instead of 28-29?

So I guess one less guaranteed year currently.

Yes. It's a pure show of good faith on Gianni's part. No benefit to extending now besides quieting the noise and locking in.

He can opt out sooner to sign a new deal and eventually make more in the long run. So he’s taking one less guaranteed year right now for the chance to make more of the course of his career.

Then again, that one less guaranteed year was only if he waited to sign until next offseason, so he’s locking in another $186M no matter what AND can make more in the long run by doing it now.
