Simmons/Rusillo podcast last night was good.

https://www.theringer.com/bill-simmons/2023/7/10/23789495/victor-wembanyama-weekend-scoot-henderson-vs-dame-ufc-290-bill-big-vegas-weekend-with-ryen-russillo

Had some balanced takes on Wemby. Then Simmons went off on Dame/Agents/NBA media for somehow implying that Portland needed to deal Dame to Miami, in order for Portland to remain a respectable franchise in the eyes of players, agents, fans, etc. Loved that part.

Also, Simmons went full throttle against Charlotte's management for passing on Scoot.

This is where Simmons excels. He's not afraid to go at NBA people, whether in columns or now podcasts.

Wemby shut down for summer league already. This is why I was surprised he even played at all.

What is "We're getting increasingly desperate so let's keep feeding Shams/Woj comically vague rumors to force Portland into taking our trash".

"I do think, as I talk to teams around the league, there is a framework with Miami where Portland could end up with three, four, at least several first round draft picks," said Shams Charania on the Pat McAfee Show. "I don't know if it will get to four. Miami has two they can trade outright. I think there are multiple teams who would trade at least one first round pick for Tyler Herro.

I understand why Lillard and Miami have urgency to get a deal done ASAP but for those same reasons there's no reason for Portland to have any urgency. While it can be agreed to in principle before then, Miami's best deal involves Jaime Jacquez who can't be traded until August 1st and as unlikely as it is, there's also no reason for Portland to not wait until Jaylen Brown agrees to an extension because if that blows up they can be well positioned to take advantage of it.

Actually smart by the Blazers to slow play this. They lose nothing by waiting. That Heat garbage offer will be available two months from now as well. Waiting either gets the Heat to actually include some better pieces, forces the Heat to bring in a third team that has assets the Blazers want (Herro probably does nothing for the Blazers but a young player and a first from another team could intrigue them), or gets another team to jump in with a better offer after their players have a chance to tamper with Dave to get him to be okay going to somewhere else (Giannis or Bridges or Embiid talking to Dame in the meantime seems entirely possible).

I hope either the Heat have to give up every non-Jimmy and non-Bam asset they have or Same goes elsewhere.

I just have a hard time believing Herro gets you anything besides a late first. I’m actually not even sure he gets you that lol.

I still think that Miami has a good Dame package, Its not 100 cents on the dollar but Herro, Caleb Martin, Jovic, Jacquez and a couple firsts is a good package. The issue is Portland has no use for Herro and so they've got to find a 3rd team to move him to. But I don't know if that's Miami's trade package. Its possible, and judging by Riley's history as an executive I think it might even be likely that he's lowballing Portland and offering Herro and Robinson and a single first, which is a terrible package.

Clearing Robinson alone is a 1st round pick at least, if not two. He's on a way worse contract than Bledsoe when it cost us a pick a few years ago. But they need Robinson's salary to match Dame's, so it's impossible to match that value with Herro, who the Heat just went to the NBA Championship without and executives should rightly question if he's an empty stats guy. If Miami weren't run by Riley and had some weird cult fetishization by NBA media and fans, then they wouldn't even be in the discussion here.

First off i have no doubt that riley is absolutely lowballing cronin. He wants dane for free and dames agent made sure thats exactly what miami will do.Your first package was ok but no one know how jovic or jacquez will turn out those 1st round picks are probsbly close to the 2nd round. Its a absolute horse sh..offer and because dames agent scared everyone away a better offer may not come in.

What i got from cronins presser is thst hes pissed theres only 1 team involved and think he really blames the agent for that.I think all goodwill is gone when it comes to trading him to the heat.If he feels like thats not a good enough offer dames not going there.Think he feels like hes being strongarmed by dame his agent n riley.I wouldnt be surprised if this trade doesnt go down till late in the year or not at all he wont be forced into trading dame for a garbage offer.
Ge should return the favor n play hardball back tell miami you want dame fine give us bam n martin to start.Seeing the heat have zero intention to make the offer not so insulting thry will say no.Cronin then says fine no bam mo dame call me when you wanna get serious

It’s not outside of the realm of possibilities that Riley is offering Robinson/Lowry/1sts and his plan to increase the offer is to include a third team to send whatever they would get for Herro to Portland.

It’s completely possible they are refusing to indlude any of Martin, Jovic, and Jacquez because they need someone besides Dame, Jimmy, and Bam to play minutes during the season.

Assuming the Heat are negotiable good faith while they use agents/press to pressure Portland to take a less than optimal deal seems silly. If it were a good package, the Blazers would have said yes already. They are clearly holding something back.

Portland already has 3 young guards, including a Herro type of undersized SG in Simons, so they wouldn't even really have minutes for Herro/Jacquez anyway if Portland wanted them. Martin is expiring, so really the long-term pieces you're getting are Jovic and 2 Miami 1sts -- when's the last time Miami picked in the top ten?

Some of the media's handling of the Dame thing has been gross and his agent poisoning the well certainly doesn't help (not sure what can even be done about that) but I also wonder if Dame packages just aren't as great as Portland would like because Dames age and contract aren't exactly risk free.

Maybe we luck out and Portland hangs on to Dame up till the midseason trade deadline and gives us a shot at adding him to our roster.
