Re: Hammond to ORL: Confirmed by ownership
Wow. Thank the heavens John Hammond is gone. I know, I know, he's a very personable guy. But, let's be clear, I will commemorate this day as long as i live: May 23rd, the day the 'Yes' man said 'Yes' to someone else.

Sadly, this makes it seem as if Kidd is more locked in than ever. Or am I missing something?

Re: Hammond to ORL: Confirmed by ownership
Here's the thing: the most likely scenario is that the way an NBA team is operated and the role a GM has within it is probably very much different than what we all assume it to be. Really, we all know nothing on this subject. We can watch players play, but we have even less data on a GM. Public speaking means pretty much nothing in this regard as there are plenty of brilliant business leaders that are laughably bad public speakers. I mean, who the hell knows? Hammond drafted Giannis, but the org has also shot itself in the foot a bunch under his watch. At the end of the day, we still have the Unicorn. Who cares if a business leader transitions?
I think more importantly, this move gives us another opportunity to learn more about how ownership is going to handle big decisions. Do they go after experience? Make the easy hire? Spend huge on a proven "winner"? Lots to see here...

I seriously don't understand all the hate for Hammond. He gave us Giannis!! Did he give out terrible terrible deals, absolutely, but we will never know if he actually made those deals or not. One thing is for sure, he drafted very well and made out on most trades, including stealing Middleton. Trader John will be missed

Ok two people quoted this very close together... I've never seen it even hinted who BuckPack was (although I remember PP25 saying he thought he'd figured it out) but are we saying he was in Weltman or Hammonds crew and a certainty to be on the move? Would be a shame to lose a legitimate source.

It's going to be super interesting to see what he does in Orlando.

Did you just compare Monroe to Simmons?...

You forgot to compare Giannis, Mids and Thon... Good luck with that.

That's scary.
Too bad this didn't happen after the draft.

Just saying that we're capped out again 9 years later.
Definitely happy that we've got Giannis and Thon.

MD, do you want to post his record or should I?
The funniest part of this is posts like this one. How anyone could not understand the hate for Hammond is beyond me. Disagree with it? Sure. Fine. But not be able to understand it? Come on.
Edit: Also, I can be very grateful that he drafted Giannis and still think he's an idiot.

I will say this. Interviewing for a position, losing out on it, and ultimately taking a job under the person that beat you out is totally a Hammond move.

OK, fair enough... Although, I think the cap is much better now.
What I got out of it was the difference in the quality of the roster more than the cap situation.

Re: Hammond to ORL: Confirmed by ownership
I give Hammond a lot of credit for picking Giannis and trading for Middleton.
Also have high hopes for Thon and Brogdon.
But throughout his tenure Hammond never was able to pick up the right mix of players to get out of the first round of the playoffs.
Kohl and Kidd deserve their fair share of blame as well but that doesn't mean Hammond was the right GM for our team moving forward.

Re: Hammond to ORL: Confirmed by ownership
So is the consensus around here now; are we more comfortable, less comfortable or nothing has changed heading into the draft?
I'm personally less comfortable since I was really warming up to picking Diallo at 17 and trying to hit another home run with him and I'm not sure we take that type of approach now with Hammond gone 30 days before the draft....
Thoughts?

Re: Hammond to ORL: Confirmed by ownership
I give Hammond credit for never really having a plan on how to build a consistently good team but doing just enough to warrant what will be close to 15 years as a general manger in the NBA.
