Congrats to our Greek brothers and sisters. Going to be cool to see Giannis in the Olympics.

We are paired up, Greece and Australia, in the group of death with Spain and Canada. Going to be crazy fun.

Giannis has never played in the Olympics? I must confuse that and the fibs world tournament. That’s really cool, that group look tough as hell though.

5/8 3p today.

Cheap Brook replacement? Is he a legit rim protector in FIBA? I was intrigued the last week but hearing he shot 5/8 is awesome

I don't think so but developing a 3pt shot is impressive. Here are his Fener highlights,

In reference to our title winning year

A theoretical version of me who is good enough to compete in the Olympics would almost certainly try to compete in the Olympics, ymmv

Looking at that group, Aus vs Greece may be the only chance each of those teams has for a win! However it's possible Spain could be the weakest team in the group.

So we can hate each other for 40 minutes that day :D

Giannis mentioned in the press conference that he became emotional because its the first time since (the playoffs of) 2022 that he played "competitive" basketball that "meant something". Because the last two years he was hurt and the rest of the games he was "just playing for that win".
Of course he included in the answer the home crowd etc, but the above mention caught my attention.

Olympic medals are tough. You will need to win strong teams at some point. Same as the NBA playoffs.

Giannis will hold the Flag alongside Katerina Stefanidi at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony

Update: Katerina declined as the Track schedule is 1 week later and she will not be there as early. This is also the reason Miltos Tentoglou will not be the one holding the Flag. He actually was the first choice.
Giannis will be with Tennis player Maria Sakkari

Update 2 and final: Neither Sakkari made it as there was some opposition in the final vote. Probably they really wanted Track in the mix so they went with Distribioti as Giannis' partner for the ceremony.

Giannis being the flag bearer and one of the first athletes leading the Olympics ceremony is so wild.

Just wow. How far he's come. It's mind blowing.

Kid just wanted to be a basketball player to feed his family, now this. It's actually unreal.

I don't understand the thing about Tentoglou and Stefanidi. Their events start later so they're going to miss the opening ceremonies? I know not everybody gets down with pomp but there's nothing that could keep me from taking an earlier flight to participate in this.

Tentoglou said that he will already be in France at another city to follow his training program.
The total hours needed (travelling, waiting, parades etc) will disrupt him.
That is what he officially said. I really have no idea if anything else is happening "behind the scenes".
But he was (totally deserved) the first choice.

It's very like Tentoglou to be like "IDGAF about the opening ceremony, it messes up my schedule"

IDK this seems to makes sense to me. This is the biggest event of your life and would you jeopardize being on stage with a medal to hold a flag? These guys are finally tuned athletes and compete in events that come down to fractions of a second. I won't want to be jet-lagged or stiff from traveling from city to city.

Obviously not at the same level, but my friend his kids recently attended the Asia games. And their event was in a different city then where the ceremonies were. I think their team finished 3rd or 4th.

They missed the opening ceremony. It was too much hassle to attend: the logistics, and screwing up their training and routine and the risk of the extra travel and losing sleep and practice time didn't make sense.

It was the first time I heard of someone skipping out on the big ceremonies. But to your point if there's risk of creating a competitive disadvantage, I get it.

Playing team ball in the regular season in order to win it all does not require playing like a maniac, or playing with Olympics-on-the-line intensity; it just really does require playing regular fully-present tuned-in team ball and not this desultory, 'lookit! I'm a wing!' 'I'm gonna do what i'm gonna do' and Dame (& Jrue, & everyone else) is gonna somehow compensate for that without GA's involvement in involving everyone else.

Does Giannis look like Giannis right now? hopefully I'm overreacting and being a little paranoid to what I'm seeing regarding his quickness
