Or if we are drafting a you guy, Kyshawn George has tons of 3 pt range.

This is my thing, too.

If you’re drafting youth, there were certainly better prospects still available that are a lot closer than Johnson.

watched more clips. the dude is nasty with the dribbles and hesi's. he will shoot it well enough. not even worried about that.

and if silver is 6 3 then our guy is AT LEAST 6 5 and probably more like 6 6. standing side by side theres at least 2 inches probably 3.... and even watching him on the floor with others he looks like hes got size.

also not worried about being a string bean. give me length and skill and he can fatten up whenever. weve drafted measurables in the past and they werent basketball players. this guy looks like a honest to goodness basketball player. i think he comes around faster than hes being projected. he strikes me as the type thats going to develop fast or not at all. the jennings giannis vibe with the ball in his hands is all over the place here. there is nothing about the way he plays that makes me think hes balling on anything but instinct and i love that. thon and marjon for example are the opposite of that. this guy just balls

This guy is not 20 yet and 6'4" barefoot. Not seeing the Simons comp in size or gameplay style, but I'd take a taller Simons.

Really need Dre and Green to take a step up and be 20 MPG rotation guys. Livingston intrigues me.

AJ arrived at a Hawks club in turmoil. It's actually usually a benefit for a Next Star signing to end up at a **** club for guaranteed mins and opportunity - see Melo. We were definitely **** - make no mistake about that.

Unfortunately, coming off the back of a 3-25 season, no one was under more pressure than coach Jakomas. Can I blame the bloke? Nah, it was his livelihood afterall and he clearly thought the best pathway to his continued employment was to go with a lower risk, conservative approach. Maybe grind out a few wins.

Expectations were low. About as low as you could get really. Truthfully no one would have been surprised to see Jakomas' contract extended if we could just scrape our way to 2nd last.

It was in this context that gun sniper and combo guard Tyler Harvey was moved off ball. Ex 2-way Buck Justin Robinson returning from injury was given the reigns as the steady, experienced hand that was to keep coach JJ in a job.

Lack of opportunity for AJ was one of the things that had fans most perplexed. There was also a sense that powers that be in the league weren't happy. Why would young players commit to be Next Stars over college only to get zero burn?

Justin Tatum (Jayson's dad for those not up to date) took over mid season and got to work fiddling with the rotation. As the season turned around, Robinson was relegated to the bench role and there were back court minutes to be had. All of a sudden the conversation was about playoff rotation rather than player development. Ultimately those spare minutes increasingly became allocated to fan favourite Swiss army knife and ultimate glue guy, Will "Davo" Hickey. No one doubts this was a good idea, Hickey's D, hustle and one memorable O board, put back buzzer beater were integral to the fairytale run.

From what we saw, I don't think anyone doubts that AJ could have contributed as a rotation player but without coach Jakomas carving out a role for him early, he was just too young and unfamiliar with systems to be considered for available minutes over more experienced heads, especially as it started look as though we may be a post-season team.

His game:
I watched him scrimmage quite a few times when the Hawks were training at the Snakepit. You hear about his speed, smoothness and athleticism but you actually might not believe it til you see it ... he's fast, in kind of an indescribable way. He creates transition from nothing. Blink and it's over.

His shooting mechanics aren't great. Like everything he does, he gets it off super quickly with seeming ease but it definitely starts low and comes off up off the hip a bit.

The body is the big question mark. He has the right dimensions but the guy is pencil thin. He'd be absolutley bullied in the NBA. The question is to what degree can he bulk up without losing the remarkable aspects of his game.

He won't be slowing down wings any time soon - I saw Gary Clark feast on him during scrimmage a few times. But fronting up to seasoned professional guards like Harvey and Robinson he was able to hold his own. He definitely lacks the strength to fight through screens at the moment.

If i squinted maybe he didn't look totally like a boy playing amongst grown men ... maybe.

Stuff like this is what makes this forum a special place.

computing to the nba game vs europe or australia and the physicality there is also a thing. this guy looks built for the spread iso nba game. he has no problem pulling from deep behind the line either. i think he can shoot it just based on the confidence there like jennings when he got here.

also he strikes me like hes gonna be a foul magnet for getting to the line in time too.

i like the kid. summer league will be fun if hes given the freedom to riff!

We don't need to do this. We know to a quarter of an inch exactly how tall he is. He's 6'4.25" without shoes, which will probably put him at 6'5" in shoes.

He didn't cry. That's a great sign.

Every pick we've made that cried ended up being a bust.

MD wanna add a letter grade poll to the thread? Curious how many will rate it above a D.

With the current status of college NIL, can we at least now be done with some of these talented kids going overseas to play. It now makes no sense on either side, especially if the players aren't physically mature enough to play with grown men.

LaMelo went from his brother's shadow and maybe 2nd round pick to 3rd overall and eventual All-Star playing for the same team.

Just given how skinny he is and looking his face, I find it hard to believe he's done growing. He's borderline NBA 6-6 right now. Three players measured at 6-4.25 in last year's combine, and they were all listed at different heights by their teams: Bufkin (6-4), Hawkins (6-5), and Hood-Schifino (6-6).

He looks so, so young still. I never would have guessed he was out of high school.

Done. I didn't list "bust" as a description since I don't think #23 can be a bust.

Better to have a poll a year or two from now but fun anyway.

This makes me think a trade is coming. I just don't understand why we'd draft a guy that we have to stash for a few years.

Like, I get needing to look ahead for the future when we can. But we had a massive need for guys that can play now. Beas and Jae are gone, Bev might be gone. So are we fully bought in on AJJ and AJ Green? This must mean we're confident in them which is good. Or, we're looking to send out someone and get more depth? I still think a 1-2 punch of Giannis and Dame would let us get away with a more complete roster.
