Nah. Never was a fan tbh. Never dedicated much time to them as well. Sorry
But i first heard of septicflesh back in 1995. Haven't watched them live(which is a little bit crazy lol) all these years.

I no longer listen to metal but when I lived in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN I had several friends who kept me exposed to classic Black Metal and other European-derived schools.

I can say, with that historical context: 'Septicflesh' is a very worthy metal band name. Nice.

I've just been diving deeper into the KEXP live recordings and the myriad Tiny Desk recordings. The quality of the recordings is truly sublime. Here's one from Bogota, Columbia-based 'Sidestepper'. Some choice cumba beats and traditional inspirational/positive vocals w/ a British ex-pat's electronic arrangement underneath. Extremely nice for a weekend morning (it's still morning here in Portland)

Great interview with hip-hop photog and scribe B+, particularly a couple wild tales about J Dilla. It took me until this long to figure that "Dill Withers" was more a tongue-in check description of his health rather than merely a corny Bill Withers pun.

Read on

Good as time as any to link to the tribute concert, with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson [Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Kamasi] leading an orchestra through an all-Dilla program.

I'm fully aware I'm WAY behind on these guys since their latest album dropped in 2017, but I've been fascinated over the past week with Royal Blood. As a (crappy) bass player, I can't help but marvel at the gall to furnish a whole sound out of an often hyper-distorted bass and a straightforward drummer. (as a non-drummer, I apologize if RB's drummer does some spectacular work that I just don't inherently pick up)

It'll take me time to get used to the vocals as it does with nearly every band I pick up, but count me in as impressed by what they have out there at the moment.

I saw The National on Wednesday- they played on the steps of the Opera House, cooler late summer day that lead to a beautiful night in Sydney for an outdoor gig (about 25C/77F). They were wonderful- opened with 4 straight songs from Sleep Well Beast and everyone was in rapture- a real testament to how strong the album is. They played 2 songs off Cherry Tree, which was great- Wasp Nest in the middle of the set and About Today to close the night out.

I went to the show with my son- we went together 4 years ago on their last tour and saw them in the same spot. It's a pretty magical spot, probably especially so if it's your hometown, and I'll treasure the memories of being able to see one of my favourite bands absolutely kill it there with my son at such different times in his life; last time he was a pre-teen and I was holding his hand to walk through crowds and making sure he could see okay, now he's more like the guy at gigs who others have to worry about seeing over (he's 6'2" and still growing).

I was just watching the new Tiny Desk performance by John Prine and aside from it being really good (especially Summer’s End) my major takeaway is that his drummer may actually be John Hammond. See for yourself.

I caught a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club gig last week. Not sure if anyone else on here is a fan, but HOLY CRAP go and see them live if you're remotely interested in them and want to be blown away. Really fantastic live, wonderful gig.

i saw them in 2005 or thereabouts and they were one of the worst bands ive ever seen in my life. its sad, because i really liked them until i saw them live, then after i saw them all i could hear was the drummer when i listened to their records. i suspect hes gotten better. but it was a combination of his inane playing style and a terribly mixed show.

with all that, id give them another shot on your recommendation.

anyways, if you like early BRMC, theyre tied into a ton of other great bands that stem from the brian jonestown massacre (the warlocks, spindrift, the lovetones). and theres a great documentary about them and the dandy warhols called DIG!

would recommend.

CHVRCHES probably has one of the most narrow sounds (therefore hard to change much album to album as everyone is supposed to these days) and I commend them for putting out ridiculous tracks at every turn even if they all have the same sound to them.

(another great track out today)

Have seen DIG and thought it was great (it put me on the Brian Jonestown Massacre arc that lead to BRMC!).

BRMC have a different drummer now than 2005, primarily because of erratic behaviour/drug problems that lead to things like your live experience. She's been with them since about 2008/2009 I think and has played on the last few albums. Very tight unit now- I can see how bad mixing would screw things up wildly with them- the level of noise/effects on guitar and bass seemed to cause a handful of problems in a couple of songs early for the folks working the desk but they got on top of it.

I didn't think it was possible to come up with a Summer Fest lineup without a single band I'd walk across the street to see play, but they pulled it off.

That's a dire set of headliners.

Worse ways to spend a day in 10000% humidity then smuggling in a flask of absinthe and taking in the Meat Pups, tho.

I like to go to summerfest to watch awful bands. I'm surprised people go for any other reason.

Yeah, wouldn't mind seeing Arcade Fire, Janelle Monae and The Pixies, but no one else is really jumping out at me at all.

Return to Milwaukee Bucks
