Generally I'm opposed to targeting these high picked busts still on rookie contracts. You generally get an overpaid young player but without the potential upside of RFA rights because the QO is so high you'd never offer it anyway. Obviously you have to go to a case by case basis but taking a flier more often than not has much less upside than most think.
That said if a team could maximize Bamba it's the Bucks. Given his strengths and weaknesses his profile is like a blueprint of what we'd want our starting center to be. If he's very cheap (I view him as a neutral contract at best) I'd take a chance on him.

The difference is Bamba isn't a bust, he's effective when he plays, and is dominant defensively. He simply doesn't play because they have an all star center, and because Steve Clifford is a weirdo.

If we do a deal with them, we'll have to do it quickly and quietly, because once word gets out, the whole league will be calling for Bamba.

Plus, the Magic just picked up Frank Mason, who's probably just as good as DJ at this point.

You have to include the Hammond factor when predicting potential Magic trade scenarios.

We know John likes dealing with former colleagues.

He also likes acquiring good men. That and he has a history of sending players he likes but that don't fit to good situations (even if that means eating a bit of value to make it happen).

Certainly don't mean to inspire magical thinking, however, a slightly lopsided deal between Hammond and Horst wouldn't be the most shocking thing in the world.

DJA's here to dribble the ball and splash 3s and he's doing a lot of both of those things, and those things are worth what we're paying him, so the argument that he sucks is dubious to me. Despite our shallow bench, we're something like +3.5 in units that have 3 or more non-starters, which you might write off as evidence that those two starters are just really good, but I think it's more about fit and the fact that the bench guys we're playing are ok. For example, Forbes is not that good, but Giannis and Forbes is an offense.

Looking at lineups that only have one of Khris, Giannis, or Jrue:

Just Giannis 111 minutes
ORTG:125.3
DRTG: 116.9
net: +8.4

Just Khris 51 minutes
ORTG: 125.5
DRTG: 104.9
net: +20.6

Just Jrue 54 minutes
ORTG: 106.9
DRTG: 98.3
net: +8.6

I don't think Orlando has any interest in dealing Bamba given their current situation. Fournier is the guy to keep an eye on. Is any combination of Brook/DJ/Pat/2nd's really a package that they'd be interested in though? Like most trades, the lack of future assets makes it tough dealing with lottery teams looking to jettison veterans. At this point it might be better to look at bad/meh contracts (Eric Gordon, Terrence Ross, Harrison Barnes) that teams simply want to dump for nothing.

Also, I think it's naïve to assume you can swap Augustin's salary for a difference-maker. Paying to dump his contract is bad asset management and he still holds some value here because, despite the frustrations with his role, he's not a completely useless player on a contender.

We finally get rid of Playoff Bledsoe and now we're talking about adding the only player who's even worse in the playoffs? Plus, we give up a starter, and our 2nd best bench player to do it?

Wow these are 2 bad deals. We'd now have the shortest backcourt in the league, and dump our 4th and 5th best players

I'd care about this if I believed that having a bad playoff series means you're gonna be a bad playoff performer forever regardless of what team/situation you're in. But I don't, so....

Oh no, not our 4th and 5th best players!? Whatvever should we do? It's almost like once you have your cornerstones set (Giannis, Midds, Jrue) the rest should be short, team-friendly deals that fit around your stars and into your system.

My issue with DJA is that I don't think we necessarily need his dribbling ability anymore. I haven't looked at a single stat in that regard and am only going by eye test, but I'd rather have someone who's solid defensively over his playmaking skills. I don't think he sucks but we're not making best use of his skill set.

After some initial growing pains, the additions seem to be doing mostly what they're supposed to do. I still have concerns about the lack of size with any sort of defensive ability on the bench. When better teams are able to play Lopez off the floor, things could get pretty sketch.

The players your trading are those players, and you trade them for worse players, and give up assets so we can't address our actual needs

I totally agree and didn't make my post to say we should be complacent. The success we've had with these bench-heavy units feels precarious to me. That could be a pre-conceived bias, or a result of not having seen enough of them in the most concerning types of situations, or not trusting anything but playoff wins. Regardless, we should be doing everything we can to get better, whether that's by executing better with the players we have or getting better players.

Trading DDV at this point of the season won't help imo. I know that he might be our best bet for a good trade but he has a role that no other player on our roster right now can cover. On the contrary I think losing Brook or DJW won't hurt that much considering Brook hasn't been that great this season and Wilson... Wilson is just Wilson... In other news Clippers now say that Lou is available but I have no idea if it is affordable to make a move for him or even if we have something that the clippers want XD.

I'll be pretty suspicious of productivity measures for a while given the noise, but for whatever it's worth, the last 4 games ought to have significantly helped pretty much every metric. Those games count, and I'm glad DJA has been significantly better in them, but he was rough the first month or so, even hitting 3s at a decent rate. He's been an absolutely train-wreck at the rim, and it's hard to give him credit for possessions where he dribbles for 15 seconds, then swings it to Portis who hits an 18 footer. Having another ball-handler matters, but that situation has looked much improved beyond DJA.

My working theory with the DJA stuff is that Jrue is a very good PG, but is so good at SG that you can play almost any primary ball handler type next to him and it makes us better. Like he's skilled enough to play point, but playing him alongside a guy who has a PG skillset gives us a huge boost offensively. We dice teams up with those guys next to each other.

What do people think about Lauri Markkannen? Maybe he's someone we could buy relatively low on. Inconsistent play and injuries have hindered his development. He's hurt again for another few weeks, but maybe a change of scenery, and put into Buds system, could unlock him.
