Serious note-----way too many teams this summer with cap space and knowledge that the cap will go up massively in two years. There will be teams that don't even necessarily want to max Tobias that will do it under the justification to make min. salary.

He's going to get a huge offer. Maybe not the max, but it'll be big. If Orlando makes the playoffs, even if they're bad, no question about it.

Will Uncle Herb get an assist on that windfall ? Maybe a nominal "facilitator" fee of 2-3 million that could be rolled into the new arena fund?

Afterall, Tobes wouldn't be likely to cash in on that level if he were in Milwaukee.....;

On average, they are, but there are still dinosaurs roaming around out there.

I think this exchange kind of overstates the fallibility of NBA front offices. While there are less ex jocks making trades based on points per game stats and hunches, there will undoubtedly be new trends and mistakes made based on the new group thinking. Every paradigm has a blind spot or two. I have no idea what this will look like, only time will tell. But just like you had Herb (dinosaur thinking) making deals basically based on name recognition volume scoring stats, I'm certain there will be new "pet stats" be it win shares, PER, etc that lead certain front office guys to overvalue and overpay.

What I am trying to say, is that GMs have undoubtedly gotten smarter. But fan expectations, meddlesome agents, and pride are still going to lead these new guys in to offering some truly head scratching contracts.

Gotta figure he'll get at least 4/50 because of the points and rebounds per game. Thing is - Orlando still loses with him putting up those numbers - and they actually do have some good players on that team - playing in a poor Eastern Conference. He's got a negative 3.1 +/-. There are a lot of things that point to him as a player who puts up empty stats.

Gordon Hayward and Ricky Rubio got max and near-max deals respectively. GMs are spending stupid amounts of cash right now. Even with the rising cap, I'm just not a fan of overpaying average young players just for the sake of retaining them.

At this point it wouldn't surprise me if Tobias gets maxed by Orlando, but that doesn't make it any less of a dumb decision.

ummm, wasn't Big Ben part of the Grant Hill trade, even though that turned out to be a disaster at-least there was a long term plan in place, unlike JJ Redick when everyone knew it was a 3 month rental for a 8th seed birth.

*Old [12/27/'15] but entertaining clip. Boylan takes special offense at Tobias supposedly elbowing LeBron in the highlights above. Tobias doesn't even touch him. Simultaneously Tyron Lue is looking each guy over trying to figure out what's going on, while Larry Drew has a laugh over it. But that scowl from Boylan reserved for him there suggests there might've been something personal at play before/after Jim shipped him out for Redick.

Eerily similar...

Both are decently efficient scorers and below average defenders. But ask anyone here and Brandon Knight getting an extension anywhere near what Tobias will get, and it's a disaster

I think both Knight and Tobias do have some similarities. Both guys have a place in the NBA, but since you earn money for ppgz, both guys are going to get contracts that will make it harder for their respective teams to put in place the other guys they need to support them.

If Tobes is at $16mm a year and BK at $12mm a year, I think both teams may regret those contracts.

Many people have pined for the job that Hennigan has done. With the assets they accrued before this offseason, they should be much better than they are. Oladipo, Tobias & Vucevic should make them a better team than we are. I don't agree or understand the Frye/Gordon/Ridnour deals, but their talent might not be as impactful as originally expected.

Pretty much this. I just had to point out the similarities and accompanying favoritism that exists between the two. Like I said a while ago in the thread, I'm not a fan of overpaying your own average young players just for the sake of retaining them.

You don't want to end up like the Jazz and have nearly $40 million in salary tied up in 3 guys the quality of Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks, and Derrick Favors.

That's a great example. And now they have to pay Kanter next year as well.

No point in paying guys big coin who aren't top 30 players until you've got your core in place.

The similarities continue.

* neither creates opportunities for teammates
* -3.7 (Knight), -4(Harris) +/- so far this season
* neither is a gifted passer

In fact, they are basically identical, except for one thing.

One is responsible for running the offense and setting up his teammates, and one is not.

Knight did have some most excellent dunks the other night though. Great 6th man potential.

I love how Harris is out and everyone wants to blame him for everything. Just like the beginning of the season when Dipo was out and the offense was flowing pretty well with Fournier and everyone wanted to blame Dipo.

Apparently the consensus is that they play faster and better without him. I believe the term ball-stopper was bandied about.
