That said, for as difficult as it is (I'm dying all the time) the load times needed to be better.

Warning that it's gotten absolutely pelted for the amount of bugs it has at launch.

I've seen that but in my experience whenever a game is getting called buggy at launch it's almost always a PC gaming problem.

I know this is not news, but Astrobot is amazing. Picked it up for the BF sale.

It looks so incredibly detailed all the way through an extensive end game already. I feel like I'll be playing this for months to get familiar, play multiple classes, etc. Can't wait for 12/6.

I went with the $160 supporter pack even though I would have access anyway. I've spent so much damn time in PoE; they deserve it.

This is the first game I've actually been looking forward to since Elden Ring. PoE is in my top 5 games of all time, so I can't wait to play PoE 2. I've been thinking about it a lot since the stream a few days ago.

I'm an old man and I'm actually **** hyped for a new video game. Well done, GGG!

Nice! I don’t think I knew you were such a big PoE fan. The sentiment on the PoE sub (which is generally toxic) is that PoE is a game for old people and I think that checks out lol.

Seeing POE prices for things I don't understand in the Xbox marketplace and I'm sorry but what?

Anyway, in the realm of games that are a lot cheaper, Nine Sols came out today on console. It's pretty good early on. Sekiro meets Hollow Night. Done a fair share of dying but not in a way that feels cheap (STALKER 2). Might stick with it.

It's literally all cosmetics. You can spend a lot on POE if you want to look pretty; you don't have to.

Detailed explanation if you care to know:

The game is very truly free with no actual P2W mechanics or features, and has been for its entire existance - about 12 years now. This is a studio that literally started in a garage with three passionate D2 fans and has grown to where they are off of contributions from the fanbase through MTX. And POE fans are quite passionate - I know may who have spent in the hundreds, while the sub it littered with people who have spent several thousand.

Certainly, some people are MTX-addicted and spend too much. I think many though just want to support the game they have spent thousands of hours in. I personally have $600 in lifetime MTX spend, but playing since 2017 and with almost 4,000 hours in the game that feels like the best ROI on a game I've ever gotten. I think that's how a lot of people approach it - I want to help support this studio, so they can do rad stuff like POE2 hopefully is.

In practice, there is a store with all of the MTX listed by points, with 100 points equal to $10. You can buy points straight-up, but it's better to buy supporter packs, which offer you the same amount of points and also "exclusive" MTX you can only get through that pack. In expected point value, you usually get about 2x the value from buying a pack, so this is generally what people purchase.

Roughly 1x yearly there are new "core" packs - new packs available that tend to be their best designs, at price points of $60, 100, 160, 240, and 480. Each pack has its own full set of stuff - and the highest two tiers have physical items also - but you also get everything from all lower tiers, e.g. the $480 pack has everything from the 60, 100, 160, and 240 packs. These packs stick around until the next core pack sets are released the next year, and you can upgrade over time if you wish.

Each new league there are new league-based supporter packs that are at $30 and $60 price points. This is the same deal as above, but more fleeting (leagues are 3-4 months in usual circumstances). In all cases, you still get all the points, and all the stuff from your pack plus the lower pack(s).

The way it tends to work for me, and what I gather from others, is purchasing packs at league launch after leagues which you really enjoyed and spent a lot of time with - like paying back for the fun you had the past 3-4 months. And I think that's how people are viewing the expensive packs here. I've spent 4,000 hours with this game the past 10 years, so let's get some pretty looking things and help support GGG.

Anyone have a Meta Quest? I can’t decide if I want one or they’re a novelty that’ll wear off sooner than later.

Yeah, I don't play it a lot but it's pretty awesome. The biggest downside is that they're still quite heavy so comfort can be an issue if you like to play for longer sessions. I got this headstrap replacement that also acts as a counterweight with a battery pack and it helps that quite a bit. And if you're a PC gamer you can use their oculus link or the virtual desktop app to play steam VR games like Half-Life Alyx. I don't think VR is going anywhere, though. If anything because it's such a new technology you might find your model to be obsolete sooner than you would like. It looks like the Meta Quest 4 is supposedly set for 2026, though so you would get a handful of years out of the 3 I'd think. In short, it's a very cool experience if you have the spending money and it's something that interests you and there are a lot of quality games out for it now.

Edit: Should also add, in addition to the games there's plenty of cool VR videos and experiences you can check out as well. Lots of nature documentary, travel stuff, concerts, etc. that are cool in 3D VR as well.

I bought a Meta Quest 2 a couple years ago. I used it for a few months and now it's collecting dust.

I'm sure the the newer versions are better. I wear glasses, so wearing the MQ2 was always a bit uncomfortable. I thought it was pretty cool when I did use it, and I could see the utility with some of the games and apps. But I just found that I'd rather play with a console. YMMV.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. This reminded me, I think they do a few NBA games in VR too, that might be really cool too.

Yeah, that’s what sticks my head, that I’ll just reach for the PS controller 95% time anyway.

God the combat in this game is soooo good. I love that it gives you training areas to get your timing down. When a perfect parry or dodge is followed up with a special combo it's *chef's kiss*.

Sony has a legit franchise on its hands.

I picked up the Quest 3 about a year ago and took in back in less than a week for a refund. It's not that I didn't like it, but it wasn't comfortable enough for me and I started getting motion sickness from it as well.

Also, I didn't want to say good bye to everyone yet, lol,and there was a solid chance I would have gotten pulled in pretty deep if I hadn't been experiencing motion sickness.

Motion sickness is a good point that I didn't think to mention. Some people get it and some people don't. I never experienced it even when first starting, but my wife does and can only do like 15-30 minutes at a time. I've heard some people can kind of find their sea-legs by slowly ramping up how long they do it, but given the price point it would be nice if there was an easy way for people to try it first.

68 hours into Metaphor and this game is a delight. My favorite spin on Atlus's turn-based formula to date, charming characters, and a really fun narrative carried by a great villain.

I'm on the home stretch of the game, I think, but I'm really charmed by the world-building:

Spoiler:
The twist about it being the future and secretly more sci-fi than fantasy is heavily foreshadowed, and has been done many times before, but Metaphor handles it well, and pulls off one of my favorite storytelling moves. The game knows you'll understand what's going on well before the characters, and leans on that information disparity in the writing. The whole sequence in the skyscraper where the cast is trying to identify the artifacts they're finding is really fun.

I'm getting a kick out of the world being a mashup of famous Japanese secret sci-fi. It's Madoka's magic rules, Attack on Titan's monster origins, and Shin Sekai Yori's dystopia. Love it.

One part that really impressed me is that almost all of the VA's have this game as their first or only major credit. Almost totally unknown cast, but they do a pretty incredible job of bringing the characters they play to life.

I don't listen to dub usually but a big issues i've noticed is the US based voice actors get recycled a lot (especially in foreign games). I'll notice people who have the same voice constantly and generally they aren't very good (they try and play up the "anime style" of voice inflection and it actually makes me cringe).

New games I played in '24

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
Balatro
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Unicorn Overlord
MLB The Show 24
Dragon's Dogma 2
Rise of the Rōnin
Stellar Blade
Nine Sols
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
EA Sports College Football 25
Madden NFL 25
Black Myth: Wukong
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Metal Slug Tactics
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Still to come:
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Man, I bounced off of just about every game on that list. Elden Ring and Dragon's Dogma 2 were the only two I completed. I played a good amount of FF VII Rebirth. Very little of everything else on there.
