That chart's pretty grim, and really makes a strong case for trying to get in the top 5.

I should be done with this thing in just a minute. The final includes Al-NBA 1st 2nd and 3rd Teams (thanks KidA24!), All-Defensive First and Second Teams, Championships, MVPs, colleges, years drafted, all-star appearances, and career playoff games (work in progress). If there's anything else anyone would like to see, filling in one category really doesn't take very long.

The link again is here:

If anyone is awesome at doing charts/graphs/that kind of thing, all of the raw data will be there. Still gotta fill in career playoff games played for all of them, which should be interesting but not damning one way or another. The win shares are probably more telling.

On a related note, apparently the Washington Wizards were the Chicago Packers for one year (1961-1962).

FWIW, I once read an article on 82games.com that said every NBA title team but one had a 1st team all NBA player on it. Detroit was the exception but they had all-star and NBA defensive player of the year Ben Wallace.

2011 Mavs only had Dirk on the second team (1st team was Rose/Bryant/Durant/James/Howard).

Edit: Dirk did make a First Team a few times though. Comprehension failure on my part.

If the draft order was based on playoff series win droughts the order would be:

1. Portland
2. Toronto
3. Milwaukee
4. Charlotte
5. Sacramento

Would be nice to have something like this included in the draft order formula.

So now I think I need to sum all the stats up based on position drafted and then this can be charted. I'll do one for players from 1990 and more recently as a test run. This will probably also take a bit to do, so maybe by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Interesting tidbit:
Only multiple two time all-stars drafted 15 and 16?

Steve Nash and John Stockton, respectively.

I just checked your google docs excel sheet. Well done. Thank you. I'm trying to put a piece together based on your chart. Stay tuned.

What I'm amazed at is that during that 20-year period 97 different guys made an All NBA team. However only 38 of them made TWO teams. So basically there were 59 guys like Bogut or Redd who made only one team.

Also this passes the quality test. For example in the center slot, David Lee, Noah and Hibbert haven't made any All NBA teams even though they made an all star team. So All NBA appears to be a better milepost. Bogut made one All NBA on the basis of what we thought was a huge breakout season. Zach Randolph also made one.

However centers who clearly were a big tier above those guys listed above did make at least two all NBA teams (Mourning, Gasol, Shaq, Ben Wallace, Yao). Moving it to two years of All NBA really sorts out the wheat from the chaff.

Its a lot easier to have an epic half season that puts you in the conversation with the big boys than it is to have a whole season. Just ask Jrue Holiday, who in hindsight should never have made it over Deron Williams.
