Ugh. Far from it. Unless you have a (discounted) mechanic on retainer its a poor bet. Bring My Wallet. I still mock my buddy for getting a 328 and selling it a year later before I ever got to ride in it because he had so many problems.
Also, as a taller person, the 3series is not a midsize car. Its Civic sized. I actually love the 5 series. Got enough space and feels luxurious. Still have the issue of the cost of repairs though.
If I were going to drop that much coin I would only buy a Volvo/BMW/Audi if I had a good mechanic that knows the cars intimitely. And even though I would do so kicking and screaming. I am having troubles with my Volvo S80. Its a huge pain. Parts are far more expensive, no one quite knows how to deal with them, etc. I would MUCH rather do a Avalon XLE Touring or Accord with all the options. Much easier/cheaper cars to work on that hold their value, etc. The cost of ownership is just far less on these cars.
