Troy Weaver, Oklahoma City Thunder vice president and assistant general manager
Over the past 10 years under Sam Presti, the Thunder have distinguished themselves as one of the NBA's most prolific incubators of managerial talent, with a long list of alumni scattered across the league. Even with all the departures, they've been able to regenerate, and Weaver represents another in their procession of rising stars.

Respected as one of the top personnel guys in basketball, Weaver not only has a discerning eye for raw basketball talent, but a feel for whether a player's emotional makeup conforms to the team culture the Thunder hold as sacrosanct. He's an obsessive student of the NBA history, with an understanding and love of the game. This database allows him to consider every decision in a smart context.

Weaver's expertise doesn't reside in managerial process or the capology, but those who have worked with him say he's a collaborative co-worker. He respects other disciplines such as analytics and sports science and can be trusted to hire an outstanding staff that would counterbalance.

I've always liked Troy Weaver as a candidate and he might work well with Zanik as our cap guru assistant

Ugh. This is what I feared. Incompetent/meddling ownership. Cronyism.

At least that's what it looks like. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's anything but that.

Hinkie would lay that to rest because he wouldn't take the job if he thought he was going to be meddled with. He's my wet dream as GM right now as long as he has a strong scouting department.

The best part of this is the new GM has to accept Kidd as their head coach. Can't make this stuff up...

Here is the other thing, when they hired Zanik, he was still a guy they basically had an interview with. Now they have had him for a year and really gotten to know him. Maybe they don't have as high of an opinion of him now. Or maybe their working relationship with him isn't the best. Who knows really but this probably means he is not their guy anymore. This also mean Kidd's job security just declined a little bit.

Don't you have a Phd from Duke or something? You might be overqualified.

Many of my friends do, but nope, I don't have that level of formal bonafides. I am too much a generalist (or dilettante, depending on your opinion of me) to care enough about a topic narrow enough for long enough to earn a PhD. I worked at Duke for a half decade, but not in a capacity that would qualify me for a position higher than data monkey.

With the limited information we have, a few scenarios come to mind.

Some combo of LED and Kidd are not satisfied with Zanik, either because he hasn't showed that hes capable (which seems unlikely) or because he was unwilling to fall into line and support whatever hierarchy is currently in place. This may be the case, and if it were, I'd assume its on Lasry's end. I doubt Kidd has that much leverage individually, besides Lasry looking our for his buddy.

Second scenario is that with Hammond leaving, we realized there is someone in the market that we want, and were doing interviews.

Lastly, it could just be they had every intention of taking interviews and with Zaniks strange position already within the hierarchy, there wasn't a clear/100% expectation that he would be GM. Maybe occupy some weird trade/player personnel/scouting role with GM like responsibilities and title?

Regardless, its concerning this close to the draft. Worried that they may default to Kidd...even if they bring in someone new before, I would bet that Kidd would probably have more influence and say in the immediate future

As long as the GM search doesn't include an interview for Kidd I'm good with it.

IF that's the case this is a massive cluster****.

This a huge risk/reward for me. It's either really good or really bad. And I'm leaning heavily to really bad at this point.

Our GM position is also much more enticing now that Giannis has emerged.

If we have a chance to upgrade from Zanik why not take it?

What has Hinkie ever done beyond tanking to get picks?

He's clearly not a great evaluator of talent and he couldn't figure out how to configure a roster.

The Bucks are not a franchise that needs to tank, so I can't see how Hinkie would be some awesome GM choice for the future.

I agree on the talent evaluation part. I alluded to that earlier myself. With a top notch scouting department, he could be a monster GM. He is an absolute maestro of asset allocation/use. That would be a welcome change compared to what we've had, and I think, personally, that that is a huge part of a GM's job.
