The talent dried up completely. Some of the biggest disappointments are Giannis's brothers. All of them are athletically gifted, Thanasis is excused as he started basketball late. Kostas is almost as tall as Giannis and he is not even a Euroleague rotation player. Kostas is not as tall but he should be able to play in the Greek league at least.

Those boys were Americanized and gifted money and women. They didn't really have the same upbringing as Thanos and Freak.

I think there's something to this. They don't have memories of homelessness/grumbling bellies and that insatiable hunger the older brothers have.

They've grown up with amazing privilege and good for them. The older brothers wanted to take care of their family more than anything in the world.

There's always something beyond athletic gifts, motivation/mindset is difficult one to quantify and capture.

I'd be stunned if this was the first time he's had a cleanup in his career. The only reason we're hearing about it is because the World Cup is around the corner. This stuff in pretty routine for athletes given the wear and tear their bodies experience.

Research suggests that 'clean ups' may actually accelerate the breakdown of the articular surface, which is why they are done far more sparingly. The term clean up itself belies the fact that it can be quite a significant surgery.

Given the persistent knee issues he's had for years, what's more likely? They waited this long to do the first one? Or this isn't the first rodeo?

As his primary issue was anterior knee pain/tendinopathy, surgery even in an elite athlete is extremely unusual due to the prolonged recovery time and poor outcomes.

This seems like a separate and minor issue that's been bubbling around this season, didn't settle with a period of recovery after the season so the decision to have surgery was made. But I have absolutely no idea, really.

It would probably surprise people how many issues players deal with every season. I'd guess every 1-2 weeks each player has an issue that crops up that they just play through. None of them would ever be completely fine.

I don't get why he didn't make the surgery right after or close to Bucks elimination on April 27th.
Maybe he wanted to skip the Greek NT and postponed it ... Greek World Cup starts at the end of August as I recall ... that is 4 full months of rest and rehab. He should play with the NT imo.

Its kind of weird how he says is a big deal that will cause future knee issues, but doesn't really give any examples of players where it caused future issues or was a surgery that shortened their career. He did mention Dwade but that was a more intense surgery and was performed TWO DECADES ago. I imagine between the cameras, tools, knowledge, and skill (Giannis is probably have a better doctor than Wade at Marquette) they have done a better job of limiting the scope of the surgery to improve cost/benefit.

And Giannis is almost 29 and probably 60% through his NBA career. As far as we know, this was the first surgery so its not like he will have 4 of these during his career. It was interesting but could do without the clickbait title to sell his hydrating powder.

ETA: My point was even said by Wade in that same interview: 1. Technology was way better even in 2013; 2. It was a different type of surgery.

Bucks doctors also did not like Wade’s knee situation in the 2003 pre-draft process. Would they have taken him if he slipped to #8? Don’t know.

My guess would be he had a minor debridement, not nothing, but also not something that's going to significantly impact him during the timeframe when he could be expected to be an elite basketball player.
