I know no one has even heard of this band, but they were one of many bands associated with boom of the underground 90's melodic prog metal movement. first time they've gotten together in over 20 years and they still sound great...

I actually do know this band - way back when their Flow album had a really high rating on the now defunct website UMR ultimate metal reviews. That's how I heard about them.

Did not know about this new one - cool

I am truly stunned you've heard of this band. I have two of their albums (In Your Multitude and Parallel Minds). I have been looking for "Flow" but it is out of print, rumor is it may get a re-release since they reunited.

The Earl Sweatshirt album is a g-damn problem is what it is. Feels very much like the jump Tyler made with "SFFB." Sounds to these ears like what Anticon was trying to do round the turn of the century except it's, y'know, listenable.

I am apathetic toward making a "top-n" playlist this year as I thought music in 2018 was just downright terrible. My playlist probably has 10 songs on it. That makes me sad.

I'm probably grouping myself in with some teenage girls in fandom (I don't really understand how that's the demographic) but the 1975's album is pretty damn good. That said, I think the previous one "I like it when you sleep..." was a better execution of what they did on this one and should've gotten higher scores/more acclaim than this.

The singles are really good on this album. Always love their ambient middle tracks, but the softer stuff is like 5 tracks of useless noise. They did it way better on "I like it when you sleep..."

This is one of the better songs of the year, though.

Listened to it last night and I concur

Saw a concert by Washed Out last night. I guess they have been around for a while (they do the Portlandia theme song). In any case, the new album has an animated graphics accompaniment, which is projected behind the band. It was pretty good:

Absolute great year in jazz and largely because of youngsters. Kamasi Washington is the name with most resonance nowadays, but unlike in past years, his running buddies have put out fantastic records. Trombonist Ryan Porter came with a front-to-back burner, highlighted by a terrific interpolation of not-joking "Night Court Theme" (Harry P Stone, rest in peace!) and keyboardist Brandon Coleman dropped his debut on Fly Lo's Brainfeeder imprint last week. Real heavy on George Duke-isms and pre-Rockit, post-Chameleon Herbie Hancock. In general, LA has really been percolating.

Big sounds coming out of London, courtesy of Joe Armon-Jones and Henry Wu's Kamaal Williams project. K-Dub is very heavily mining the astral-minded deep soul inspired by the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith and any of the underheard heroes on hot-tipped indie labels from the 70s like Strata East and Tribe, but there's very much an IDM influence to production. Armon-Jones is one of many that has broken out due to Gilles Peterson's efforts on the Brownswood label. Unlike some of the stuff off Brownswood, these are more firmly jazz than, for a lack of better term, what used to be referred to as acid jazz.

For my money, the most compelling of all has been coming out of Chicago's International Anthem conglomerate. Drummer Makaya McCraven is easily the one most tabbed to join Kamasi beyond the insular community of jazz listeners. His "Highly Rare" live date is stunning and features him remixing and tweaking a club show. It's hard to tell where the performance starts and the remixing enters and I can't think of an effort that more seamlessly merges hip-hop with jazz. Anybody who checks out Flying Lotus is well advised to bend their ears this direction. McCraven has a new record coming out on October 25 and I am juiced. Will feature collaborations with some of the Londers mentioned previously, as well as arranging genius Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. McCraven pals around with and has featured guys like Tortoise's Jeff Parker - who put out his own fantastic record on International Anthem a couple years ago - and has provided a way out of the neo-conservative morass that has long plagued jazz.

Highly Rare is dope af. Love the hybrid Sun-Ra electro bass. Have you ever checked out Nik Bartsch and/or Ronin? - very much ECM-ish Zen ritual funk type of erudite white Euro shyiiiit. But, man, I saw them in Denver with a light show. It was sublime.

I have checked out Bartsch.Thought I might be into it, but like a lot of the ECM stuff, I found it bloodless. I could see the live experience being something else entirely.

ECM is apparently re-issuing 50 records in the first half of 2019. My wish for Stanley Cowell's "Illusion Suite" to be part of that program looks like a wish unfulfilled.

Saw Trio Mokili play a gallery show in Madison a couple weeks ago. Longstanding line-up has been Nathaniel Braddock on guitar, with Junius Paul and Makaya, comprising the rhythm section. Junius is on a whole heap of Makaya's stuff including "Universal Beings." Anyway, Makaya was supposed to be on the kit, but he was tapped for an overseas tour. I was salty, but they plugged in Nicole Mitchell's drummer and grooved hard on some Afro-jazz. World class live jazz in a space the size of a large living room is something else.

Oh man. I can absolutely feel you on the ECM tilt. It's often like a puff pastry. So much air and no substance. I think that is oftencase the problem with Euro jazz. However, I don't get the same feeling when I am launched out of my seat at a 'The Comet is Coming' show. These guys feel like what would happen if Albert Ayler grew up in the Oregon Trail generation but were babysat by Fela Kuti. And, to boot, the patented amazingly talented white kids on drums and synth/keys.

If you are that into Trio Mokili - I am not particularly - you might be interested in the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. They're a part of the Budos Band/Sharon Lee and the Daptones Brooklyn collective of peeps. This KEXM performance is pretty god damn soulful:

Anything on Boiler Room is worth a peep in my experience. I can't figure out if I'm into Comet is Coming or not, but I'll have to give it a longer shake. Thanks for the head's up. Ayler looms large for me, cool to hear someone on here familiar.

I appreciate Antibalas more than I like them. I usually just end listening to Fela himself or something off Soundway. Out of all the Daptone affiliated material, my fave is the El Michels Affair record "Sounding out the City," though Budos just put out a spaghetti western-styled soundtrack to "Postales." Group credited is Los Sospechos but it's a nom de plume for Budos. Heavy on the Calexico tip which is freaking catnip for me. Getting much burn ATM.
