Meh. Due dilligence in case Amare looks like a monster but Horst is too smart to go there. Even a prime Monta seems like the last person a Jon Horst team would sign.

Loser: The East

Again.

Even the Bucks are worse off for losing Malcolm Brogdon, their second-best player for parts of the Eastern Conference finals. (One of biggest swing questions in the 2020 title race is whether Eric Bledsoe has permanent playoff-itis. With Brogdon, the Bucks almost made the NBA Finals despite Bledsoe struggling. Without him, they have limited margin for Bledsoe error.)

Recouping one first-round pick in the Brogdon sign-and-trade with Indiana matters; the Bucks were out two, and they need trade currency. Expect them to search out ways to flip that pick for talent, provided such a deal does not take them into the luxury tax.

They could also have kept Brogdon despite some long-term injury concerns, and paid the tax. That's what contenders do. I would assume Milwaukee took Giannis Antetokounmpo's temperature on this. Signing his older brother, Thanasis, to a two-year deal was certainly nice.

Not sure but I think that it is best for us to get as close to the cap we can with the best combo of players, such as someone good instead of Leuer or/and Ersan. Then we can go over the cap with Middleton for whom we have the Bird rights. Signing km now probably means that the remaining cap space is taken by km plus he goes over the cap by a smaller amount. This 2nd option is inferior to the 1st option.

Looking more closely at Covington scenarios.

How concerned are we about his health?

Brian Windhorst of ESPN:

the Wolves were offering him around at the draft as they looked to move up. Depending on his return to health, league executives believe he could be on the market again.

Covington is one of the NBA’s best defensive wings, and he’s a solid 3-point shooter. His contract (three years, $36,415,035 remaining) is team-friendly both for the low salary and lengthy control.

But he missed Minnesota’s final 45 games last season with a knee injury. That could cool interest in the 28-year-old until he shows he’s healthy.

Gersson Rosas just took over the Timberwolves’ front office. He didn’t pick most of these players. If he’s attached to the players he inherited, it’s mostly coincidental. So, expect movement – maybe including Covington.

For 12 million per. If we have the available money go for it.
He doesnt have to play insane amount of minutes.
I dont know much about Covington but if he is great defender and can shoot the 3 it's a no brainer.

I'd like to think the main reason we went to the Amar'e/Ellis thing was for the lulz.

Maybe it was a covert way for teams to meet up under the guise of watching those dudes :reporter:

I don't remember following our transactions this closely before, but is this the longest we have waited for contracts to be announced?

Nothing can be announced until something happens either with Leuer or Ilyasova. Bucks need to open some money to sign these deals.

Part of me is excited about this Thansasis signing...more of like a good feeling to get to watch him play with Giannis. Plus, after years of signing lethargic energy guys, I like having really high energy and high motor players on the roster. Even if they don't get a lot of PT, they are pushing guys in practice and good for the overall culture of your team.

I like the Thanasis signing because it shows the Bucks are doing what they can to keep Giannis here and happy. It also makes me think Giannis was probably consulted before the Bucks threw $178 million at Khris Middleton. I know some folks want players to "just play" and the front office to do their jobs, but when you have a once in a generation talent you do everything you can to hold onto him.

Possible that Covington would fit into our TPE?

Average salary is $11.7 million for the next 3 years. He makes $11.3 million in 19/20 if it's based on that season.

Not sure how I feel about offering the Pacers pick for him if we're worried about his knee. Would probably give up DJ Wilson since his center minutes disappeared with the RoLo signing.

Would be great to have a defensive stopper like him but not clear if he's more a 3-point sniper or more just a good shooter.

Fit with Middleton would be a consideration if he'd be moving more to the 2 as well.

Can we do Leuer and TPE for Covington?

So then we would actually be saving money? Or am I just wrong?

Ohhhh Sergio Rodriguez parting ways with CSKA. I’m sure he could make more elsewhere but he’d be so fun to watch throw lobs to Giannis.

You can't combine a player and a TPE for salary matching purposes. But if Covington fits into the TPE you very well could absorb him creating a TPE for Minnesota which they could use to absorb Leuer. In theory.

Saw this on the General Board. 538 has a new defensive metric for yielding minimal openness by nearest defender. Here's the roster with most recent data:

Okay, I'm going to be honest and admit I haven't read the piece, but it does say that Zinger is the third best defender of the past 7 seasons.

So...what?

This is interesting, just like any stat it seems to have its flaws and situations where it can be exploited, however this seems to pass the eye test. Fwiw Brogdon was +0.88 so between Wilson & Hill
