Thanks a lot, guys. Love you all. Honestly the only thing that sucks is I'm gonna have to wait until the 3rd to GTFO. I'd be more upset if I wasn't gonna spend Labor Day weekend loving my time with the family she hates because they didn't like her IG stories

She missed living alone for the first time and it scared her. I'm really glad she called it off. In the wake of that decision it's made me realize how much I bent over backwards for her in every way. How I had to compromise on everything and she didn't compromise at all, not even once, even when it had fundamental issues with me behind it (I don't like spending massive amounts of time with groups of people because I get anxious, don't like to close down bars anymore, I like sports and videogames).
Myself and my family paid for literally everything for the wedding and we're not getting a dime back.
The last straw came this morning (we were gonna stay together and work on things, even though she's been a **** nightmare since the week before the wedding). She felt slighted on social media when my sister and SIL unfollowed her (they were right to do so, she was flagrantly happy on IG over the weekend we were supposed to be getting married) and she LOST HER MIND. She lives for affirmation on IG. For two days I've listened to her insult my family, say she never wants to see them again, that she wants both our families out of our relationship. But this morning the second her mom wants to meet with us (interrogate me) she asks me if I'd do that. I called her a hypocrite, said there was no way I'd be doing that. I left for work, found a new apartment with my current landlord, and texted her I was done with this bulls*it and I was done trying so hard when she was trying so little.
Guys: I'm really **** happy right now.
I remember your posts a few months back. I was with someone like that for 12 years... Gave everything I could, nothing was ever good enough, complained and bickered about every f#$@ thing. She was hot as hell, but It was hell to be with her. It was depressing to be with such a selfish, negative, and controlling person.
For real, You dodge a bullet, like Matrix style.

You're stuck living together until then?

I'm guessing his new lease doesn't start until then.

That sucks ass. I'm sure you're probably already going this but I'd be visiting friends and doing cool trips or some **** the next 2-3 weekends and even doing a weeknight at someone's house or something.

It was a great, damning piece.
And now after reading that and the stuff about the dress code (lol) this makes sense:

I love many of the folks who write for the G/O sites, and these kinds of disputes between the "business" and "news" functions of a business enterprise are not unique to them. It's good that they're unionized because they can fight back against some of these "rules" that management is unilaterally trying to impose. But I think they're going to keep bleeding talent. I'll be surprised if Laura is still working there by the end of the year.

Re: OT: General OT Thread [NO POLITICS OR RELIGION]
I agree with the the majority of what they are saying and I know we've interacted about this on twitter.
I like almost all of the deadspin people and again, agree with the majority of what they say...I have unfollowed because I log on twitter to stick to sports these days. My brain can't handle hours of shitposting about other stuff that I'm mostly already aware of.
I grew tired of just circle-jerking and harrassing (again, I agree with th em) which NYT writer wrote a **** article or which Barstool guy they should ignore but just can't anymore.
But I like Greenwell, Marchman (also gone), Roth, Magary, etc...but I guess I'm one guy they still lost in that demographic. There is a need for this site though (you guys are making a case for that right now).
I think Laura is a talented writer but literally 90+% of her posts and content are not about sports. She seemed misplaced there.
Not for me anymore, but there's a market for it. Someone should start up yet another site or conglomerate for this market and somehow not allow it to be taken over by venture people.

I will add that the site will be run into the ground, though. As noted, I don't give a **** about their barstool drama and politics with a touch of sports takes or whatever anymore but the majority of the remaining readership is there solely for that stuff.

I think it's one thing for RGM, which is almost all forum-based, to go with 'stick to sports' and another for an editorial outlet that made its bones coloring outside the lines to do so. Donald Sterling is sports, labor negotiations is sports, representative coach and gm hiring is sports and a billion other examples that exist away from the field of competition is sports.
And I think Kerb's POV is neither right nor wrong and I really don't want this to look out like a callout. It's not and if it looks like it is, that's on me. There should be places that are 'stick to sports.' The problem is enclosing sports in a sports bubble.
That said, Ley's recent piece is masterful and I can't imagine he's long for G/MO:

Old Deadspin (which was a bit problematic and bro-ish in some ways) was stuff like the Favre pics, ESPN interworkings drama, the Te'o unveil, and things like that.
To take this to a wider point and pull it away from having this thread get political...our brains are not built for this. While being vigilant about the issues is something that drives progress (good and bad these days) in the world, too much of this stuff probably is aiding the rise in depression/suicide. I don't mean the content itself - I mean the fact that we are bombarding ourselves with it.
Old Deadspin was a good mix for an escape from the real world.
That said, reading people just dunking on someone who is literally trying to be a troll (Portnoy, Bagel Boss, politician, whatever) gives your brain a rush. You get a lot of rushes from it and the culprit makes you more and more mad and you become more and more addiction to the brain rush of being mad at that person. Not to mention, paying attention to and attempting to dunk on those people gives them a louder and louder voice online. I'm not doing a great job of scientifically explaining this, but there are a lot of twitter personalities I cannot follow anymore.
For me, I stick to getting my rush of chemicals to my brain from yelling at people on the Brewers board and the Badger thread on here. I'm self deprecating here but it's hard to avoid and we all do this stupid **** somewhere.
To me, "sticking to sports" does not mean to ignore the problems in the world. I'm fully aware of them just as much as any avid Deadspin reader.
However, everyone's brain needs an escape from the real world. Movies, music, funny articles, comedy specials, fun with friends, etc. Deadspin is no longer an escape from the real world. And again, there's a place for that and you guys enjoy the writers and personalities. But call me old fashioned - sports are supposed to be an escape from the real world.

I totally get this and this what I meant when I referred to there is a place for 'sports' sports.

Yeah, I meant to say that I didn't take offense to what you said. It's all good stuff they put out...it's just not what it used to be. It would be cool if whoever buys them could understand that and embrace it.

The only true way that a fan can "stick-to-sports" is to watch a game or read a box score. And if that's what a fan wants to do, go do you. But I'm not sure why a sports editorial site should cater to that interest. That's fundamentally against their very purpose.

Re: OT: General OT Thread [NO POLITICS OR RELIGION]
This is all way far over my head and I'm trying to keep up but am struggling, as I don't read Deadspin (or anywhere, really) regularly (podcasts for news, forums for sports, ...no where for pop culture ). So as an outsider just hearing about all of this now, I will say that when I would stumble upon the site...way back when I used to like it, then it became kind of gross and I didn't like them, and now it seems like they had trended back toward being good again. So, sad to see them go I guess.
On the "stick to sports" spectrum, I fall roughly around where chones appears to.
Oh, and Barstool sucks. It makes me sad Kaminsky is bros with them.
ETA: I said bros with the heaviest of air quotes I could possibly muster.

And I should add a respectful reminder that some people can't just tune out the issues in the world that directly impact them. Some of us have to deal with it every single day whether we want to or not.

You could write/read a longform, deep-dive article about a player or team. You could have comedy articles about the player or team but generally stay away from "Jay-Z's partnership with the NFL is why capitalism is bad" type headlines.
It's all over the internet.
Magary's Why Your Team Sucks, while every once in a while will mock people and teams in a political-ish way are what I'm talking about in a good way. Sports and comedy.
