Just played the demo on Steam. It is...rough. It wants to be a farming-inspired cross with something like Valheim, but it does not feel good (to me) right now. I stuck with it for about an hour, and there isn't much to play in the demo, but I'm content putting it down. It's only a demo, though, so who knows I guess.

One of my buddies tried the demo and said roughly the same thing. He wasn’t a fan and is no longer interested. It’s unfortunate, maybe they can polish it into something good over time but it’s sounding like it’s forgettable.

Looks like it's trying to be The Forest a bit too

Anyone have any book recommendations on videogames? Whether that be development of a game, the battle of console wars, etc? I feel like I could bridge a fun gap after reading/watching the recent story on Elder Scrolls Online on IGN.

The Surge 2 might get boring at some point, but for now I'm finding it a really interesting Soulslike. The hook with this one is you can target and hack up limbs and weapons of enemies to make your own gear. It's a tradeoff: do you go for an enemy's unguarded head or arm that doesn't have armor? or do you make the fight tougher by chipping away at the weapon and armor. I nearly finished off the first boss going after his weak spot, but let myself die so I could come back and go for his powerful boss weapon instead. I did and was rewarded.

Also cool is the feature of injections which provide boosts. You have a battery which is like a reserve energy pool for you to use on whatever you want. Offensive attacks, defense, or recharging your injections. When it depletes, you charge it back up by attacking enemies. You could go into a fight with two health injections, use them up, but get them back by hitting your enemy and charging the battery.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this one.

So The Surge 2 is definitely a game I'm loving a lot. I took out a big baddie very early on you're not technically supposed to beat, especially since you only have one shot at him, and it landed me a weapon that's made nearly all other weapons useless. That's cut out some of the enjoyment of slicing up enemies for their weapons and experimenting, but being too badass isn't really a problem.

One thing that has sucked some enjoyment is the lack of a fast travel. I'd say I'm at or near the midpoint, and I know that I've passed over maybe dozens of spots I couldn't get to yet without a certain tool. There are also farming spots that I'd like to be able to get to easier, but now would require tons of back tracking. It's exhausting to think about.

That said, if you like Dark Souls, give this game a try. I might actually consider this a nice gateway into the SoulsBorne genre. You can get it for about $15 most places or for free on Game Pass.

Yea, this is just a beautiful, wonderful game. So far it's not on the Ori level, and it's not as overwhelmingly deep as Ritual of the Night, but a couple hours into it and it's great.

Valhalla is currently $23 for PS4 on Amazon, with free upgrade to the PS5 version. Any impressions from folks, especially those that played on PS5? I'm just about to wrap-up RAC Rift Apart and not sure what I'll move to next. I wasn't sold on it at launch, but for $20 I think I'd be ready to jump in maybe. I could use something to immerse into.

If you liked the previous two AC games, you'll like this one. More of the same. It's absolutely massive and while I dumped dozens of hours into it, I only finished I think three of the 10 or so regions. If you're just looking for a time suck, it's your game.

I think that's what I want right now. Either something familiar and comfortable (which is why I thought AC), or something pick-up-and-play without a story really. I'm moving this summer and just won't have much time or brain to dedicate. It's taken me longer than expected to beat RAC even.

Sounds like it might fit the bill then. I know I won't ever finish it - I don't think I got even half way through Odyssey - but it was still fun. I didn't want it for $60 but $20 works.

Steam Summer Sale seems likely to start tomorrow by all accounts. Anything to look out for? I’d love some more XCOM like turn-based tactics games, but I think I’ve played most of the big stuff.

I finished Biomutant, I thought it was really fun. I've got a bunch of other games to get through but i've just been playing Valheim w/ my wife. Getting more caught up with the building part and not much progression but it's still good times.

Since I plan on consuming zero of anything sports related for the next day, I'm spending my time watching Stardew Valley vids. Relaxing.
