humanrefutation wrote:I was watching "Stick to Football" from the Overlap podcast series featuring five former professional soccer players - Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Roy Keane, and Ian Wright. It's usually a really good discussion about what's going on in the world of soccer (especially Premier League, Champions League, Euros, and World Cup). Again, the quality of top-level punditry abroad is miles above our own here.
Anyway, they finished the latest episode by having a discussion trying to rank these top sporting events. Their consensus ranking:
1. World Cup Final
2. Super Bowl
3. Ryder Cup
4. The Ashes (had to look this one up - it's a biannual cricket match between England and Australia)
5. Tour de France
Ian Wright made an impassioned argument that Ryder Cup was #1, which blew my mind as I never considered that among the top sporting events. I was also surprised that the Super Bowl was 2 among a bunch of Brits.
World Cup Final is definitely 1 in my book.
I honestly didn't know people cared about the Ryder Cup that much. But at the same time, it's ranked over biking and something I've never heard of. So is it actually that cared-for, or is it just a narrow list?
ETA: I enjoy golf, to be clear. But I've never really gotten into Ryder Cup. Same goes for Laver Cup.
