I would think it's dumb if the Wolves didn't already have two star players in KAT and now Butler. But it's absolutely necessary for their core and long term outlook to lock up Wiggins. I'd bank on a talent like Wiggins eventually "getting it" on defense under Thibs/Butler rather than using what minuscule cap space not extending him would open up.

I agree. I think worst case Wiggins is a future borderline AllStar. 26-34 per year isn't horrible for that type of play. If he gets it going, he will look like a steal come year 5 if contracts just have normal growth.

You think worst case for a player who shoots well below avg TS%, is an awful defender, and has never had a positive RAPM is to be a top 15 player in the west? I think the MOST LIKELY outcome is WAAAAY less than that. Have you seen the list of players in the west?
Adding Teague and Jimmy is going to take away a LOT of FGAs. And those will come at the expense of Wiggins not KAT. I think a 5/148 is going to look horrific before it even kicks in.
In 3 years they will be paying:
Kat 5/148 (or more)
Wiggins 5/148
Butler ~35M
Teague 19M
Dieng 16+, then 17M
I just don't understand how Minny does this.

Eh, Teague is only on a 2+1 contract and they can move Dieng on that deal by attaching a minor asset at worst. They're in fine shape cap-wise because there's not a lot of overlap in those contracts. Butler and KAT are severely underpaid for the next two years so you can afford to do all this.

The +1 is a PO. That's a -1 to me.
And Dieng is not a minor deal. These big man deals are already incredibly difficult to move and will be harder moving forward. And if they can trade it its not like there are any teams out there that can just absorb it. They would likely have to take back salary.
To me this means they have a starting 5 that will make ~$135M in 3 years. That's not doable for the TWolves.

Listened to a pod cast on this today. One of the main reasons is that they bid against themselves (sound familiar??) he was an RFA but they resigned him at 12.01 at the start of free agency.
2 years 9 mil? That is hardly not worth getting up and arms about. Much rather have him than Derrick Rose.
While that small of a contract isn't going to hurt them too much, Zach Lowe's overall point is he's not sure Baker is an NBA caliber player, so to give him that sort of contract, with a player option for a 3rd year, is pretty shocking. There's literally nothing that he does well. He was an awful finisher around the rim, dreadful mid-range shooter, terrible 3 point shooter, and just a blah defender.

Wiggins is this generation's Rudy Gay. Minny's going to regret it the same way Memphis did.

Some random reports from the U20 European Championship so far:
Kansas' Michailiuk is not enjoyable to watch. He has the green light to shoot everything as his teammates are trash, resulting in 39% FG with 5+TOs per game (to 3.5 AST too..)
Lithuania has 2 good big men, Echodas is a very athletic PF who has touch inside and good insticts about rebounds and blocks, need sto get bulkier though and get some range. Birutis is a 7-foot, huge C with a fantastic touch with both hands. He shoots with the left which is unusual. Good rebounder but he's bigger and stronger than everyone, so that's expected:P He has insane vision for his size and age, finding shooter on the roll or kicking it out from post-ups. Runs the floor surprising well, but lack in vertical.

just generally, not specifically Wiggins (this could apply to Jabari as well, if he plays effectively in 2017-18).
Let's say you draft a guy. It turns out he's not the guy you hoped he'd be, but he has some value ("elite scoring 6th man" comes to mind). He's not really a player you'd like for your core, going forward (because maybe you value defense or guys who aren't black holes with the ball), but no one will offer you a deal that you think is satisfactory.
What do you do?
1) take a bad trade deal?
2) let him test the market and match it if it's not obscene? Knowing there will be fallout with fans if he moves away without netting anything for the team.
3) try to negotiate an extension that isn't horrific, hoping to be able to trade him during that contract?
I really don't know. I'd probably do (2), but it takes guts.

I'd imagine they want picks on top of assets for Kyrie. He's signed through 2020.
