Indefinitely sounds terrible, no doubt, but usually when a surgery is season ending, it is reported as such. That's the basis for my flimsy optimism at this point

Just curious why we went after smaller C's in Diakite and now Mamu. Brook was ageing, he needed a backup.

Ron Swanson wrote:This sucks but I guess it was looking inevitable. As much as I love Boogie, you can't plan on going into the postseason with him and Bobby as your only back-up bigs. There's gonna be situations where both those guys can be played off the floor defensively (Bobby essentially was vs. Brooklyn). Horst is gonna have to get creative and swing another mid-season trade.

Yes, for a forward, not a center.

Portis however is extremely playable in the playoffs now that he's being used in a hedge and recover scheme.

F*CK!!!

Damn. Same, it was like cosmic foreshadowing

Yeah, figured this was coming. Love the guy, and hope for the best, but I'll be very surprised if we see him again this season.

You wonder if they were giving it until a sort of drop dead date when he could have the surgery and still most likely be back for the playoffs.

Who are potential buyout bigs?

I had an L3/L4 laminectomy a few years ago. One month out of work (desk jockey). After that month, I was able to return to normal activity.

On the other end of the spectrum, my Mom has had 3 back surgeries. The first involved a bunch of SS hardware being added to her back to stabilize things. She was laid up for like 4 months & was then able to try to ease back into her routine.

Clearly, a man Brook's size presents a whole different challenge. I don't think his age is a terribly big deal from the surgical aspect. But trying to return to form as a professional athlete, who knows (especially since no one knows the type of procedure he went through).

That's my guess/hope as well. Gave it as long as they could before having to make a decision on surgery and still have a chance to play this year.

FWIW, Zach Lowe just reported in this segment that there is optimism he can return before the end of the regular season.

Well, I know one big who is eligible to be traded on or after December 15th. He may not be the phenotype, but he is definitely the genotype. Great sense of humor, too, but candidly not that good at basketball.

I think I'd consider RoLo as a stopgap. I'm guessing something like a RoLo for George Hill trade would work.

Yeah this sucks but seems like there’s a good chance he’s back this year, we’ll see though.

RoLo and Thad Young are your ideal buyout guys. Because a trade doesn't make sense considering you'd have to send out an important rotation piece just to match salary (Hill, Pat).

Gee, if only we had somehow acquired a useful $7-10 million salary slot in the offseason that we could send out in trades....

Not sure I can stomach another half a year of rolo honestly.

Well, ****.
I guess we're stuck with Boogie...and he kinda feels like he's held together with duct tape.

Brook will be 34 in April.
It's very hard to come back to NBA playoffs shape at that age even if he'd simply taken a year of to rest, never mind coming back from surgery...
Bottom line is we're not the same team without him, especially on D :(

A few names that come to mind (just speculation on my part): Kevin Love, Derrick Favors, Tristan Thompson, RoLo

Non-Centers: John Wall, Thad Young, Goran Dragic, Gary Harris, Satoransky

I reckon Kevin Love would be an intriguing acquisition. That said, if he gets bought out, I'd expect him to sign for the Lakers.

Bud bull **** for weeks and only a day ago said no setbacks. Needing surgery seems like a big setback to me.

It sucks but I'm just going to assume Brook wont play a significant role at all this season. Thad Young is the only obvious guy who we can bring in and contribute in the playoffs. Hopefully him or another sneaky guy can be brough in and contribute.

Maybe he didn't want the whole league to know we're looking for a replacement big and drive prices up for someone like Boogie.

I don't know, I'm just making up stuff.
