Milbucks96 wrote:That’s a very injury prone guard rotation, plus with hill being old as hell and Jrue right behind him in age. Pat is probably 90% of the player Donte is but will cost half as much but plays twice as many games.

To me it’s pretty clear that ddv is on his way out with them trying to trade him last year, him getting hurt again, and them basically trading for his replacement. I would bet he’s gone by the deadline for sure.

Certainly plausible Donte is on his way out,

Horst talked him up a lot recently but it could mostly be posturing (and it was pre-Grayson Allen too).

Horst was adamant the foot injury isn’t a problem but that is a big variable if he’s really BS’ing.

On the other hand the Bucks could be pushing to extend Donte for all we know — especially if it’d be a likely value contract that could be in the wake of his scooter situation.

It’s a good show. Frustrating at times with what they did with certain characters though.

we disagree.

Could of replaced the SOA patch with the hells angels patch instead n thats pretty much what you get out of a 1% outlaw MC club.1 on 1 without guns they probably were all pussies but i guess anyone can be tough when all you do is shoot people instead of actually fighting

I definitely should not. My life would be infinitesimally better if I didn't watch the first season.

Congrats to Bud. Most of us had him walking the plank at some point in time last season, myself included, but this is well deserved and I would have expected 4 years, but I guess they don't want him getting too comfortable.

Kinda interesting the extension is only three years. I wonder if the FO pushed for that or maybe even Bud. Seems it would've been the FO - maybe they don't quite trust him still?

Yea honestly you could spin it in either direction. I’m one of the few that actually likes Bud but I would understand if the front office was a bit cautious due to his stubbornness, even though we switched up a lot this year. But from the outside looking in, this seems like it could’ve been more from buds side instead of the front office.

Like I said earlier, that last year is the year before Giannis player option. Jrue has a player option the year before that and Khris has a player option in 23/24. Maybe he wants the security for now and the option to leave if the team takes a rebuilding route which he probably doesn’t want to be apart of e.g. the hawks.

The real answer is nobody knows what went into the decision for only 3 years. It’s definitely interesting though.

Bud's playoff winning percentage is 25th all-time. It would be higher if you only looked at his record with MKE.

The bucks are one Giannis injury away from a complete rebuild. Why would either party want a long-term commitment? They can always extend again in a couple of years.

Don't care if the Bucks implode over the next 3 years. I definitely wanted Bud gone, but winning cures all ills and the championship cannot be taken away. Guy deserves to either keep on working here (where he's actually built a fantastic culture *staring dismissively at Jared Dudley and Jason Kidd* and helped turned the team into a perennial contender) or a golden parachute for helping get us to this point. Certainly deserves the 'chute more than any of the Kohl cronies used to.

I think my favorite type of Bucks fan is the one who both loudly celebrated the Bud hire as a "home run" and called for his head every other day early-to-mid season last year...

Anyway, Bud's best attribute is his ability to put ego aside and ask his players for advice. Fully recognizing that this is in fact a player's league. Bud was one of the reasons we'll have a banner hanging at Fiserv in a couple months. And I thank him for that.

Do you have particular players in mind?

We just acquired Allen so I suspect if we were to make a consolidation trade it’d be Donte on the outs.

Pat though seems like such a value on his contract that I have a hard time seeing deals worth including him in (especially considering our luxury tax considerations).

But if we don’t deal Pat it’s hard to generate enough salary to make more substantial trades, but even then it’s not like he makes so much money that a world of options opens up even if we were willing to cash out on Connaughton.

Dejounte Murray, Bojan Bogdanovic, OG Anunoby?

Not a single one of those players works in a trade for Allen/Pat or DDV/Pat.
Dealing with people who exhibit the "smartest person in the room" syndrome can be a challenge. One approach is to listen their opinion while also encouraging open-mindedness. It's important to create an environment where all voices are valued.

The way you win in any sport is with talent. The Bucks had the second best talent last season before the Nets injuries. After Harden and Irving went down, the Bucks had the most talent and won.

The same people who are applauding the extension are the ones who would have joined me in having him fired if Durant's shoe size was smaller. There would have been close to zero posters who would have wanted an extension. Losing to a much inferior talented Nets team would have been the end of Bud's tenure. In the next two series, the Bucks were much more talented than the Hawks or Suns.

I have no problem extending Bud, because it doesn't affect the cap and the owners can get rid of him at any time. If the Bucks lose to a fully healthy Nets team this year, they will be beaten by a more talented team. If they lose to anyone else, that would not be acceptable.

And in terms of being stubborn, which Bud is, I tend to admire stubborn coaches who have a set philosophy and stick with it because it is hard to do something great if you don't concentrate on it. Tony Bennett is a great college coach who always runs a strict man defense and hates zones or switching.

But in the pros, the players are so good it is hard to have a philosophy that allows and encourages open shots, which the drop defense does. Luckily for the Bucks, Horst has done a great job in having elite individual defenders. The Bucks defensive talent is second to none in the NBA. It can make up for a lot of deficiencies.

The players 100% determine the fate of the team, which is why you must fire the coach if they lose.

Part of the question is how much per year. In the past five years or so, the coaches salaries have really jumped. Some of these guys are getting $10-$15mm per.

Three years does feel short for this kind of post-championship extension, which indicates to me that the reports he was on thin ice were probably accurate. Not that we had doubted them. Nurse got a 4 year 32m extension after his 2nd year with the Raptors. Vogel's extension with the Lakers was for 3 years, and his grip on that job seemed similarly tenuous before they won the Covid Cup.
