Was pretty fun to take part in this though. I found it easier to do everything but shoot using a controller; shooting with the mouse was definitely a lot easier IMO. Gameplay itself obviously had some similarities to Rocket League but in a more grounded way, since...you know...you're not playing soccer with rocketship cars. Still very chaotic but felt like an easier learning curve than Rocket League to me since you don't have to worry about the flying mechanics in addition to the soccer mechanics.
One major difference, good and bad, is that this game apparently will not be free to play. I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to pay to play this to be honest, but in the very least, the beta was enough to get me interested in seeing where it goes from here.
I love the idea of that. Looks fun. Will be interesting to see the reception it gets when it's out in full and if it can retain a player base.
I will also say the people playing in the trailer definitely know what they're doing more than the beta people did lol. Had some games where everyone just tried to take the defense on completely by themselves, spamming rainbow flicks and stuff until a defender finally tackled the ball away from them. And aside from the occasional lucky miss that rebounded right to someone for a goal, you didn't really see people shooting it off the wall as a means to fake the GK out (definitely saw people using the walls along the sidelines for passes pretty frequently though). I did have a few games where my teammates actually passed it around like a real soccer team would and that was such a great experience.
One critique I had for Sloclap is the beta didn't list the controls anywhere for some reason. There was a tutorial to help get the basics, but didn't explain how to do things like the spin move that they show in the trailer and there were some preset character mapping options you could choose from, but those options only explained what the differences were, not what ALL of the controls were. So for example, it took me one game to figure out that there's a pass button and that holding down R1 when passing will basically chip it up in the air to hopefully cross the ball over the defenders head. It took me two games to figure out how to throw the ball as a GK instead of kicking it everywhere. Given the fact that the beta only lasted 24 hours, I wish I could have looked the controls up easily, though I will say there is something I kinda miss about learning video games as you go. My eureka moment below for example felt even better because I figured it out myself.
My personal highlight came after I figured out the passing button. Basically, shooting just goes wherever you're aiming your reticle (controlled by right thumbstick, and as you get better at it, you can add spin to the shot to curl it), but passing goes wherever you aim your left stick. One of my teammates had the ball on the right sideline and I came cutting in from the left directly in front of the goal. He crossed it to me and instead of trying to receive the pass with my back to the goal, turn, and shoot, I just hit the pass button and aimed it at the goal so my player did a little backheel kick that the GK never saw coming and I got the goal and everyone in the voice chat started going crazy lol.
