After 1 listen I don't like it quite as much as Boxer of High Violet, but it's still very good. "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" is great, though.

Broods has been showing up every once in a while on my Spotify Weekly and I've liked it all.

System Only Dreams is fantastic and a highlight - as a lead single, no less - but the new The National album really is pretty great. Maybe not their best, but I think their best in a while at the least. Day I Die and Dark Side of the Gym are so good. The more I listen to the album the more I enjoy it.

Love it.
The only argument I would consider for Bryan Devendorf not being the best drummer on earth is that Jeremiah Green is still hitting the skins for Modest Mouse.

I don't know enough about drumming to comment too intelligibly I'm sure, but Darren King (formerly of Mutemath) is pretty god damned incredible.

Normally I don't post in this topic, so I don't know whether any of the other greek posters around here has already commuted the band, but I would like to present Villagers of Ioannina City (VIC), the band that marries psychedelic stoner with the traditional greek folk music of Epirus, the mountainous, north western region. In short, it's The Tool fused with lament-like polyphonic vocals and clarinet, with surprising good results.

Oldie, but... if you have Marr and Sumner you guys were already pretty **** amazing. Getting Neil **** Tennant to just sing backing vocals is insane.

I can't even begin to imagine how many times I watched You Got Lucky or Don't Come Around Here music vids as a kid.

Re: OT: 2017 Music Thread
Petty was probably my all time #1. Had been saying for years I had to see him before he passed after missing him at Summerfest like 6 years back. Glad I went this summer even though I thought he'd be one of those guys that lived forever.
Overall I think a massively underrated or underappreciated legend. With all the stuff in Vegas he's not going to get the public week long tribute legends of his level usually get. Like Prince got last year, Petty is every bit the legend Prince is.

Resident Lillard truther since 2015.

I have spent a lot of time over the years trying to figure out why I like Petty so much. I know his music is not exactly relevent any more, not was it ever sophisticated.
But his songs are perfectly minimalistic, without feeling like that was intentional. They were simple, without seeming like he lacked talent or ambition. I think these atatements are true of both the composition and the lyrics. Sparse without compromising uniqueness. Widespread apeal without feeling like that was the goal. With the way radio and music distribution have shifted, artists like Petty might not happen any more (multiple songs that chart in the top 40, enter rotation on classic rock, are eventually loved and memorized abd sang to by multiple generations.
Like, I know Tom Petty is not critically acclaimed or appreciated by snobs. But I feel his music was somehow known by all, and yet he was still in many regards under appreciated.
